Currently at @albionbarn , on view in Heavy Metal, Anthony Caro’s Aurora is a major example of large-scale, volumetric sculpture. Built from a giant ocean buoy that sat in his studio for three years, the sculpture features rolled steel elements designed to feel like waves. After several colour trials, it was Caro’s wife, Sheila Girling, who suggested the unmistakable, vibrant red coat that gives the piece its landscape-defining presence.

This deliberate use of uniform block color directly connects Caro to James Capper. Heavily influenced by Caro’s legacy, Capper similarly applies vibrant industrial marine paints to his mobile, hydraulic sculptures. While Girling and Caro used a singular hue to elevate salvaged steel into fine art, Capper uses vivid coloring to highlight the mechanical functions of his engineering—creating a brilliant cross-generational dialogue on how paint bridges the gap between heavy industry and sculpture.
