Read The Guardian’s feature on Heavy Metal, the dual exhibition of work by Anthony Caro ( @anthonycarocentre ) and James Capper (@jamescappersculpture ). ‘Swifts screech overhead, hares lope along the grassy paths and butterflies flutter in the woodland fringe. There is an orchard; there are chickens, beehives. It seems simply a lovely, if conventional, slice of English countryside - until you happen upon striking sculptures fashioned out of chunks of reclaimed steel or machinery parts salvaged from factories, shipyards and farms. The pieces are the stars of a show called Heavy Metal, which brings together work by one of the UK's most significant 20th-century artists, Anthony Caro, and one of his successors, James Capper.’ - Stephen Morris. Albion Jeune and Albion Barn (@albionbarn ) are delighted to announce the publication of Heavy Metal, to accompany a dual exhibition of works by two pioneers of British sculpture, Anthony Caro and James Capper. The book charts an intergenerational dialogue within British sculpture, featuring new images of monumental steel works by Caro alongside Capper’s hydraulic Mobile Sculptures, Rotary Paintings, and works on paper. The exhibition began at Albion Jeune in London, and is now on show at Albion Barn in Oxfordshire through the summer. The publication features a specially commissioned essay by Deyan Sudjic which charts the relationship between Capper and Caro, alongside a text by Capper recounting his personal relationship with Caro. Currently at @albionbarn , on view in Heavy Metal, Anthony Caro’s Aurora is a major example of large-scale, volumetric sculpture. Built from a giant ocean buoy that sat in his studio for three years, the sculpture features rolled steel elements designed to feel like waves. After several colour trials, it was Caro’s wife, Sheila Girling, who suggested the unmistakable, vibrant red coat that gives the piece its landscape-defining presence.This deliberate use of uniform block color directly connects Caro to James Capper. Heavily influenced by Caro’s legacy, Capper similarly applies vibrant industrial marine paints to his mobile, hydraulic sculptures. Heavy Metal brings together seminal work by Anthony Caro (1924–2013) with the pioneering practice of James Capper (b. 1987).Albion Barn’s large-scale presentation of indoor and outdoor sculpture succeeds a dual exhibition at Albion Jeune in London. Drawings, preparatory maquettes and indoor sculpture are displayed across two galleries at Albion Barn, while large- scale outdoor works are exhibited in the lawn and fields. The presentation is accompanied by the publication of a new book exploring the legacy of Anthony Caro within British sculpture, and his continued influence on James Capper’s artistic practice. Erwin Wurm’s ‘Fat Convertible’ is on show at The Berkely Hotel, Knightsbridge, London ( @the_berkeley ). ‘Fat Convertible’ is a high-shine aluminium sculpture cast in 2019. The work plays with form and scale, as the inflated form reflects Wurm’s knowing sense of humour and commentary on modern consumer culture. The work was cast in 2019 and weighs an impressive 800kg. Heavy Metal, a dual exhibition at Albion Barn and Fields, Oxfordshire, (@albionbarn ) presents an intergenerational dialogue between British sculptors Anthony Caro (@anthonycarocentre ) and James Capper (@jamescappersculpture ).Anthony Caro (b. New Malden, 1924, d. London, 2013) played a pivotal role in the development of twentieth-century sculpture. In the early 1960s, he began making brightly painted, abstract steel structures that he positioned directly on the floor, the omission of a pedestal marking a radical shift in the dynamic between work and viewer. Using prefabricated steel elements salvaged from scrap yards alongside found objects from his material surrounds, Caro developed new ways of making sculpture that would be more immediately expressive. James Capper’s ROTARY works seen at Albion Barn. Capper’s sculptural practice as a ‘speculative engineer’ leads him to work with the versatility of the machine: blurring boundaries between sculpture, biomimicry, and industrial processes. HYDRALINER juxtaposes mechanised processes of modern mass production with the creation of unique artworks. An ergonomic collaboration is performed between artist and machine, bridging the gap between human intuition and repetitive methods of production.Both Capper’s paintings and sculptures use the same industrial marine paint, bringing together the two and three-dimensional elements of his practice. Heavy Metal, a dual exhibition of sculpture by James Capper (@jamescappersculpture ) and Anthony Caro (@anthonycarocentre ) opens at Albion Barn and Fields (@albionbarn ) on 7 June. The exhibition expands upon the presentation at Albion Jeune to feature large-scale and outdoor works by two pioneers of British sculpture. Capper and Caro’s works are presented in a dialogue which charts the evolution of British sculpture. The legacy of Caro’s revolutionary abstraction is developed by Capper’s mobile sculpture. His practice of speculative engineering creates a sculptural language which incorporates biomimicry and mechanisation.Heavy Metal demonstrates the artists’ shared material preoccupations: Caro’s command of welded steel creates striking forms, whilst Capper’s use of vibrant colour echoes Caro’s bold painted steel works. Let’s celebrate a great man . Heroic painter Georg Baselitz has passed away . The figurative painter I most admired and who I first showed in 1990 . Unwavering in his mission to paint and sculpt the figure . Never distracted from this task . Baselitz was a giant who stoood in the shoulders of giants and from that privileged vantage point could see a way forward . by @albionbarn
