I Work Longer Hours Than My Male Predecessors Because I Have To Do Household Chores And Apply Makeup — Japan’s PM, Sanae Takaichi Japan’s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, has said she spends “three or four more hours” on household duties than her male predecessors while managing her demanding schedule. Speaking in parliament on Wednesday, Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, said, “In the morning, I bathe, fix breakfast and then wash dishes, not to mention apply makeup. I feel like I’m spending three or four more hours than male prime ministers doing these things.” Takaichi, who describes herself as a workaholic, has previously disclosed that she sleeps only two to four hours a night and sometimes schedules staff meetings as early as 3 a.m. Her remarks came during a discussion about the lengthy hours Japanese prime ministers spend attending parliamentary sessions, where they can face questioning from opposition lawmakers for five to seven hours daily. Fumitake Fujita, a lawmaker from the ruling coalition’s partner, the Japan Innovation Party, cited a study showing that Japan’s prime minister attended parliamentary sessions for 72 days in 2022, compared with 50 days for the United Kingdom’s prime minister and 13 days for Germany’s leader. While acknowledging the importance of parliamentary discussions, Fujita said, “The fact that our leader is confined for such long hours to parliament isn’t in line with the global standards.” Takaichi previously wrote on X in July that she was “getting consumed until dawn with poring over documents brought home from work and those related to parliamentary questioning”. Speaking in parliament on Wednesday, she added, “I do enjoy reading these piles of documents at midnight that I took home.” However, she said it was difficult to find time to think clearly about the country’s future, adding, “But it is difficult for me to squeeze out time to buckle down and think with a clear head” about “the future direction of this country or my grand vision for it”.
