Highway to the Stars
This was my first setting Milky Way panorama of the season, shot at around 3am on a very cold frosty night out between Burkes Pass and Tekapo. The galactic centre is already tilting toward the horizon, with the path of the highway leading straight into it. If you look up and to the left you can spot our two satellite galaxies, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, 160,000 and 200,000 light years away. The amber/green glow close to the horizon is airglow emitted by our atmosphere, energy absorbed from the daytime sun!
