New Discovery: Williams-Jones-1, the Oyster Nebula

We are excited to announce a new discovery in Carina, Williams-Jones-1. This new object spans roughly 6.2 x 3.5 arcmins, and the discovery is the result of around 120 hours of exposure time from Steve Jones, @sean.makin, and @morefield. While the nature is unconfirmed, it is likely either a planetary nebula or ISM feature.

The final image is a result of 30 hours of imaging done by Kevin using with his CDK17 in Chile.

We hope you like this new discovery!

Highway to the Stars

This was my first setting Milky Way panorama of the season, shot at around 3am on a very cold frosty night out between Burkes Pass and Tekapo. The galactic centre is already tilting toward the horizon, with the path of the highway leading straight into it. If you look up and to the left you can spot our two satellite galaxies, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, 160,000 and 200,000 light years away. The amber/green glow close to the horizon is airglow emitted by our atmosphere, energy absorbed from the daytime sun!

Cosmic Stranger

Last month, I was lucky to see the comet C/2025 R3 PanSTARRS from the top of Mt John Observatory, just as the comet was passing by Orion on its way out of our solar system. Really cool to know this is potentially the last time this comet will ever be seen by humans, as its now on a hyperbolic orbit to leave our solar system.

An Infinite Universe

This was such a fun night, watching the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter, realising the evening zodiacal light was already visible, taking an astro-selfie with both the arching milky way, and zodiacal light. This is also a slightly different image style which I’ll be doing more of- tracked, shot with a fog filter and edited with StarX.

A website with my portfolio and print shop is now up, if you’re interested consider checking it out in my bio :) by @molin.n.n

Valley Arch

For a while, I hadn't done much tracked milkyway imaging, but decided to give it a go on this perfect night.
To access this point a very cold, knee-deep river had to be crossed, but hopefully the shot is worth it! by @molin.n.n

| Clouds of Magellan |

Since coming to Tekapo, I've been able to see these 2 galaxies almost every night, and finally now finished my capture on these staples of southern hemisphere skies.
The Large Magellanic Cloud image is a 2-panel mosaic while the Small Magellanic Cloud is a single panel. Both are HaRGB composites shot at 130mm, roughly 4h each. The first slide is cropped from a 24mm image of our south celestial pole region, with the high focal length fields superimposed.
The abundant background dust includes integrated flux nebula (IFN) from our galaxy as well as tidal streams of the dwarf galaxies. by @molin.n.n
