Artist in Residence Spotlight: Viviane Diehl
We are thrilled to share the incredible work of Viviane Diehl,
@vivianediehlartista currently participating in the IAC
@internationalacademyofceramics Special Residency Project in Longquan!
Rooted in the Guarani cultural view of the natural cosmos, Viviane’s work deeply explores the themes of fire, floods, and drought.
Through her powerful ceramic sculptures, she captures plant life devastated by environmental disasters, capturing the delicate, vital transition from carbonization to new growth.
By blending diverse techniques—such as slab building, coiling, and molding—she creates striking contrasts:
Black & White | Gloss & Matte — Evoking the eternal struggle between destruction and rebirth.
Color Gradations — Moving from deep blacks to brilliant greens, symbolizing the pursuit of light and hope amidst climate crises.
Her Vision in Longquan:
During her residency here, Viviane plans to merge Brazilian ceramics (inspired by Guarani pottery) with traditional Longquan celadon glazes to advance her powerful series, "After the Fire, After the Flood."
By experimenting with local clay and innovative celadon techniques, she will layer textures, slips, and glazes to depict burning, uprooted trees along riverbanks. Through this immersive, cross-cultural material research, her work seeks to reconnect us with the essence of earthly coexistence and freedom.
