sometimes there's peace
and sometimes violence
then there's me

a coastline

where nights are spent
learning where sand ends
and ocean begins

wondering which stars
are my ancestors

who jumped from the ships
knowing death
was better than bondage

I started this one with the thougt of duality, living in a non-binary world, where there is beauty in all emotions and in not knowing where something begins and the other ends.

But I struggled to find an ending to this piece right up until the point where I rewatched Black Panther where there was a scene where Erik Killmonger (Michael B Jordan) said “Just bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from ships, ‘cause they knew death was better than bondage.”

That quote hit home and made a lot of sense where there is more freedom in death than in suffering in a life of slavery.
