Quick & Easy Poster Design - that isn't Gen-AI
You might not know: Graphic Design is my day job. And I design a LOT of event graphics. You don't need something fancy to get attention. You DO need a clear, readable graphic. Something ai can't give you, even if using ai to advertise art WASN'T idiotic.
Top shows the title "Fake Fair" in large, pink, funky text. Below it, "Saturday, May 10, 2-8pm" in green sans serif font.. Yellow arrows point out that this line of text isn't as wide as the title. Image copy: Date & Time. One line of smaller text. Shorter than title line.Contrasting color. To reduce visual clutter leave out extra punctuation & text that doesn’t add additional information. When you abbreviate Saturday, leave off the period. When you write May 10, you don't need a "th" after the numbers of the date. When the time is on the hour, you don't need to include the colon and double zeros. When the start time is in the pm and the end time is in the pm - you don't need to write pm after each time. Just write 2 to 8 pm. Not 2pm to 8pm. Same for am, ofcourse.
Same text for title, date, & time. But now with location text. Same font as the date & time, but smaller and italized. Yellow arrows also show that is even shorter than the date & time line. Below that: Location. Make sure you include it! I can’t tell you how many event graphics I see assuming we know the city & state. But it can be small.I like to keep it the same color, just below the date & time. Often I italicize it, for contrast.
Same as previous, but below the location line, there's a line of text that says "arts & crafts" in the same funky font as the title, but not as large and in lighter pink. Below that in the sans serif font and the same green are much smaller letters that say "absolutely no ai". Even though this text is so small, because we have plenty of white space and there's so much contrast between it and the larger text, people will read it. Image copy: Details. Keep these short & sweet. It’s still the internet. Only include the most important info on your graphic. The rest can go in your post, email, or webpage.
The top part of the image is covered up with image copy. At the bottom are three arched shapes with pcitures of art and merchandice inside them. Image copy: Images. Use photos from past events or from this year’s vendors. Try using a repeating shape as your image frame. Put images on the bottom. It’s better for them to be cut off than the date or location.
Final poster! All the images come together to make a simple but cohesive poster that will catch people's attention and tell them immediatly What your event is, when & where it is, and if it's got the type of vendors your viewer would be interested in!

Learn how to make a quick & easy poster design!

It fills my hear with joy every time I see an ugly craft fair poster on facebook that was obviously made in microsoft word. Because it's not ai!

But. I also see these art show heroes making some mistakes that might cost them vendors or attendees. And they're easy to fix!

Good graphic design isn't about being super snazzy, it's about being able to communicate clearly with your audience. But when I look at some of these posters it can be hard to find all the information I would need, in order to attend the event. Sometimes it's just getting lost. Sometimes it isn't there at all.

Now - it doesn't ALL have to go on your graphic. And I'd encourage you to put MOST of your details in the post text. But, the info does need to be SOMEWHERE - because most people are not willing to do a small research project to find out where a whimsical craft show is going to be.

Now, if you'd like your graphics to be both clear AND snazzy, I'd really encourage you to support small businesses by hiring a graphic designer.

But I also understand budgets are finite. I panic when I see your $150 booth for a one day show. You panic when you think of a $150 bill for some social media posts. We all need things to be cheaper. You might consider an in-kind trade. Booth space for design services.

Even so, if you find yourself NEEDING a DIY event graphic - this is my go to formula for online posts that get read. And anyone can do it.
