I know I’m not alone in this, and while I’ve been unwilling to celebrate for quite a number of years now, I’m even less so this year. I cannot, in good faith, observe the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence being signed, when people like Yaakub are being detained for their practice of freedom of speech. I find our country undeserving of a celebration when the powers that be are trampling on every right we stand and fought for, and those who have the power to put a stop to all this are unwilling to cause the “good trouble” that the late Rep. John Lewis talked about.
We’ve screwed up so many times as a country, just as much as we’ve also shown our potential. To be at all resemblant of what the demagogues claim us to be involves acknowledging our screw ups, stop REPEATING them, and work towards a future that actually is obtainable and beneficial for EVERYONE living in it.
And I know that releasing Yaakub is just one of MANY ways to do so, for our country is better with people such as him in it.
