Today is my birthday, and all I wish is for my friend, Yaakub Ira Vijandre, to be free. Since October 7, 2025, he has been unlawfully held by ICE; not for his immigration status, but for using his platform to speak out on the oppressive systems that are now being used against him. His First and Fifth Amendment rights are constantly being violated, and as of December, his DACA status has been unlawfully terminated. On January 6th, his merits hearing was held, which will determine whether or not he’ll be freed or deported to the Philippines. However, a decision is — for whatever reason — still pending. Just know that if deportation is what winds up being decided, that STILL would be going against the law.The fight continues on for his long overdue release, and that is where I call upon your help. Yaakub’s family still needs funding, both to cover the legal fees and the ancillary fees. If you can donate to at least ONE of the fundraisers and DM me a receipt, that would mean so much. I also ask that if you are in the U.S. and have yet to sign the petition, please do so. That will be sent to your district and state representatives, demanding that they take action in calling for Yaakub’s release. You can go to the links featured in this post or in my bio.If you also want to get involved in the campaign advocating for his release or want to keep up to date on his case, please go to @freeyaakub. What is happening to him isn’t getting nearly as much attention as it should.Show up for his family the way many of you have shown up for the family of #ReneeGood. …And in the last few months before he became a dad, might I add! 😳In all seriousness, it was a pleasure and a dream come true to get to collaborate with @ajrafael. NOC’s own @akolaurenlola recently saw the 1987 vampire cult classic, #TheLostBoys, for the first time. Ahead of the film’s 40th anniversary next year and with a musical adaptation now playing on Broadway, she gives a hot take on a scene that — whether intentional or not — gives undertones of an all too familiar yet racist experience for many Asian Americans. by @akolaurenlola

I know I’m not alone in this, and while I’ve been unwilling to celebrate for quite a number of years now, I’m even less so this year. I cannot, in good faith, observe the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence being signed, when people like Yaakub are being detained for their practice of freedom of speech. I find our country undeserving of a celebration when the powers that be are trampling on every right we stand and fought for, and those who have the power to put a stop to all this are unwilling to cause the “good trouble” that the late Rep. John Lewis talked about. We’ve screwed up so many times as a country, just as much as we’ve also shown our potential. To be at all resemblant of what the demagogues claim us to be involves acknowledging our screw ups, stop REPEATING them, and work towards a future that actually is obtainable and beneficial for EVERYONE living in it.And I know that releasing Yaakub is just one of MANY ways to do so, for our country is better with people such as him in it.#FreeYaakub #America250 by @akolaurenlola

Posted this as a story a year ago, and decided to give it a home on my normal feed, because these thoughts remain unchanged.The number of years will continue to add up of when Loving v. Virginia passed, when the Philippines regained their independence, when the Pulse Nightclub shooting shook up Orlando’s LGBTQ community, and when Anne Frank entered this world. In Chiharu Shiota’s “Two Home Countries” exhibit at the @asianartmuseum, many themes are explored; one of them being about existing in the “in-between-ness” of two distinct places.
