SINATRA - Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, to Italian immigrants with roots in Liguria and Sicily, Frank Sinatra came of age during the swing era, though his influences stretched further back, to the era when jazz and “sweet” music were in constant competition for the spotlight. The popular male singers of his youth Bing Crosby and Al Jolson shaped his early vocal style, but Sinatra also absorbed lessons from the legends who would later define jazz: Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday among them.

Known to the world as “Ol’ Blue Eyes,” Sinatra is widely regarded as one of the greatests entertainer in the history of American pop culture. His remarkable career spanned over five decades, from the late 1930s to the 1990s, evolving with the times and leaving an indelible mark on music, film, and society. Despite dropping out of high school and lacking formal music training, Sinatra’s natural gift for storytelling through song transcended his inability to read music. His first major hit, “All or Nothing at All,” seemed to foreshadow both the arc of his career and his relentless pursuit of artistic perfection.

Sinatra was as complex as he was iconic, winning nine Grammy Awards, three Academy Awards, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a Congressional Gold Medal. His personal life was equally storied, with romances involving some of Hollywood’s most captivating women, including Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, Juliet Prowse, and Mia Farrow. Beyond his artistry and larger than life persona, he was a passionate advocate for social causes, speaking out against anti-Semitism and championing the Civil Rights Movement, all whilst giving generously to countless charitable endeavors. Among his many collaborations, his work with the legendary Quincy Jones and Count Basie’s Orchestra stands out as a personal favorite.

When Sinatra passed away, the world lost a titan. His voice, timeless and rich with emotion, reshaped what it meant to be a singer in modern pop culture, setting the bar for every artist who followed.

This is one of my favorite (and one of the most beautiful) places I’ve ever been. The South Solon Meetinghouse, just outside of Skowhegan, Maine. It was originally built in 1842, but between 1952 and 1956, the interior was covered with an unbelievable combination of frescoes overseen by faculty and staff of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (where fresco painting is a pillar of the school, about five minutes down the road) and financed by Margaret Blake who had attended the school. There are 13 individual frescoes that kind of blend together to create this unbelievably engulfing storm of color and figure that feels unlike anything I’ve experienced, especially since the building stands alone on a rural corner, 15 minutes outside of Skowhegan. It really feels like it should not be there.

The list of artists includes some that studied under fresco masters like Rivera, and the committee that oversaw the fellowship included the directors of The MoMA and The Whitney at the time. It’s an absolutely wonderful place to be, and probably my favorite American fresco site (with possibly the exception of Rivera’s Detroit Industry Murals) I’ve seen. I sat solo for an hour, moving from vantage point to vantage point. It feels like you’ve slipped through a seam, into another universe. I’ve thought about it every day for the last two weeks

If you want sex, make it clear. If you want a relationship, make it clear. If you want somebody to talk to, make it clear. If you want someone's help to move on, make it clear. But don't use someone. I repeat, don't use someone.

Btw, poetry book 'Between Heaven & Earth' is out now. It's a collection of poems about love, heartbreak, loneliness, inner struggles, healing, and the quiet journey of understanding yourself and life along the way.

If you'd like to read it, comment "Book" and I'll send you the link.
