With roots reaching back to the dark period of slavery, gwo ka music and its accompanying dance have, over the past few decades, been championed by figures such as Luc-Hubert Séjor and Erick Cosaque, as well as in the early recordings of Kassav’. Originating in Guadeloupe, this Afro-descendant tradition is embodied by the gwo ka drums, played daily to accompany both the joys and sorrows of life. Richly codified, these instruments and the stories and tributes they carry are experiencing a revival today through the ExpéKa collective, driven by drummer Sonny Troupé’s intricate arrangements, Casey’s unstoppable flow and Célia Wa’s gorgeous melodies.

Performing on stage at the Petite Halle in Paris to celebrate Qwest TV’s eighth anniversary, the composer, flutist and singer opens her set with “Ola,” a powerful track arranged by the inimitable David Walters. The more sensual “Démounaj” echoes the soulful depth of Erykah Badu, and “Huey” perfectly blends organic sounds with local rhythms. Influenced by the musical cultures of the African continent—her debut album Fasadé features Nigerian artist Owomide and celebrates Vodoun—Wa’s short set reaches its climax with “No Lies,” an enchanting track originally recorded with kora player Ousmane Kouyaté: a true work of art.
