A full-circle moment.

Several years ago, Cynthia Hawkins and I worked together during a pivotal moment in her career.

She had built an extraordinary career leading a university art gallery, but she felt herself being called back more fully to her own art practice. We spent time exploring what that next chapter could look like and how to make room for it.

She followed that calling.

Today, her work continues to be exhibited at museums and galleries internationally, and when we met this week she shared exciting news about her upcoming group exhibition at MoMaPS1 @momaps1 (November 5 opening).

This time, our roles had shifted.

I reached out because I’m entering a season of expansion of my own.

I’ve loved art for years. I’ve also been painting off and on for nearly 17 years. Now I’m ready to give that part of myself more attention: to deepen my practice, learn the language of abstraction, and become a better artist.

Cynthia was incredibly generous with her wisdom and 40+ years of experience as an artist.

Her parting advice was simple:
“Begin. You get better, the more you do it.

Why wait?

Never stop painting.“

Life has a beautiful way of bringing people back to each other. Sometimes you’re the guide. Sometimes you’re the one being guided.

I’m grateful for both.
