For the past few weeks, I've been exploring a new direction in my Print/Making after an inspiring month of reading, looking, and reflecting with the
@bakehouseartcomplex Book Club.
I've begun incorporating recycled paper as both a material and a conceptual gesture. Under Pressure is a new series of one-of-a-kind mixed-media relief prints that investigates the visible and invisible pressures shaping contemporary life. Each layer is printed under the physical pressure of the Takach etching press and letterpress SP20, where force transfers ink from matrix to paper, becoming both a material process and a conceptual metaphor.
These two works are printed with the phrase "Sobreviviendo a duras penas" ("Barely surviving"), words shared with me by family and friends in Cuba. The phrase carries a quiet weight, speaking to resilience, endurance, and the everyday act of moving forward despite uncertainty.
I'm still thinking about where this series is going, but it already feels like an important shift in my practice.
