Not all ACL tears need surgery… you’ve just never been told otherwise.
For years, ACL reconstruction has been seen as the “default” treatment after an ACL rupture. But the reality is far more nuanced.
Some people absolutely benefit from surgery.
Others can return to running, the gym, work, and even sport with bracing and/or structured rehabilitation alone.
The best treatment isn’t determined by your MRI, it should be determined by you.
A good decision should consider:
✅ Your MRI findings (including any associated injuries)
✅ Your level of instability
✅ Your sport or activity demands
✅ Your goals
✅ Your lifestyle
✅ Your preferences
✅ Your willingness to commit to rehabilitation
Whether you choose surgery or a non-operative approach, one thing remains the same:
Rehabilitation is the cornerstone of a successful recovery.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. The best outcome comes from making an informed decision with a healthcare professional who takes the time to understand your individual situation, not just your scan.
