Wheeler Peak New Mexico: The highest natural point in New Mexico. It stands at an elevation of 13,161 to 13,167 feet. It sits in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains inside the Carson National Forest, just northeast of Taos and near the Taos Ski Valley. Named for Major George Montague Wheeler, who led the West-wide Wheeler Survey mapping the U.S. south of the 100th meridian in the 19th century. One of my most favorite feats I’ve ever had the blessed opportunity of doing.
