BEL-OMBRE COMMUNITIES RALLY AROUND ‘GREEN HARVEST’ TO EMPOWER YOUTH AND BOOST FOOD SECURITY

BEL-OMBRE, SEYCHELLES — Local NGO Gaea Seychelles, in partnership with the Bel-Ombre District Administration, has successfully scaled up ‘Green Harvest’, an innovative community-based initiative tackling climate change, food security, and youth development.
What began as a small youth vegetable garden called ‘Zarden Zanfan’ has transformed into a fully operational site naturally producing food. The project integrates a greenhouse, irrigation, organic waste composting, to teach sustainable living.
Beyond environmental benefits, the project reports significant personal improvements and character building among local youth. By selling harvested crops at local shops, participating children are also gaining critical entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills.
Supported internationally by the Rotary Club Horizon Luxembourg, the Chevening Alumni Fund Programme, and the British High Commission, Green Harvest serves as a national pilot model. Gaea Seychelles aims to eventually replicate this community-led food security framework across every district in the Seychelles.
