šŸ”“Citizens as River GuardiansšŸ”“

Residents of Bel Ombre have raised concerns about the red-coloured water flowing through RivieĢ€re Grand St Louis, near Bel Ombre School. This river is home to some of Seychelles’ rarest endemic species, found nowhere else in the world, and its waters eventually flow into one of Mahé’s most beautiful beaches.

Citizens have also previously reported concerns about sewage entering the river.

Any necessary river modifications should be carried out with the appropriate permissions and in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures designed to minimise environmental impact. The visible extent of the impact raises serious concerns about whether these safeguards are being followed.

So, What Can We Do?

We can protect our rivers while still allowing our communities to grow.

🌱 Protect natural riverbanks and green spaces.
🌳 Keep vegetation along rivers to prevent erosion.
šŸ‘· Train maintenance teams to protect river habitats.
🪰 Use species like mayflies to monitor water quality.
🐟 Prevent invasive fish from entering our streams.
šŸ—ļø Make sure new developments consider the health of our rivers.

Before the Next Downpour

Healthy rivers help protect our homes, communities and environment.

In Seychelles, heavy rain is part of island life. But when natural riverbanks are replaced by concrete, rainwater moves faster, causing more flooding, soil erosion and pollution.

Our rivers are also home to unique freshwater species that help keep our water clean. When these habitats are damaged, the health of the whole river system is affected.

šŸ’§ Our rivers are not just drainage channels. They are living ecosystems that protect us by @gaea.seychelles

Empowering the Youth, Protecting Seychelles

For Mary-Mon, Project Leader of the CEPF project ā€œEmpowering Younger Generations in Watershed Management, Monitoring and Integration of Innovative Healthy Food Systems into Ecosystem Management,ā€ the inspiration was simple: to touch the lives of young people.

Through hands-on activities such as Hugelkultur, watershed management and environmental monitoring, the project gives youth practical skills to build a more resilient Seychelles.

ā€œSeeing young people participate, laugh, learn new skills and become interested in protecting the environment has been the most rewarding.ā€

Her message to young people? ā€œStart small, get involved and don’t be afraid to learn. Every action counts when it comes to protecting our environment, especially our beautiful Seychelles, which is our home.ā€

Heavy dependence on food imports? Climate change impacting local ecosystems? Bel-Ombre has an answer!
We are incredibly proud to highlight Green Harvest, an exciting community initiative led by Gaea Seychelles.
What started as the ā€˜Zarden Zanfan’ youth patch is now a thriving eco-hub.
How it’s making a difference:
• Empowering Kids: Children build leadership skills and positive behaviours through nature connection.
• Building Business Skills: Youth harvest crops produced naturally, sell them to local shops, and learn real financial independence.
• Uniting the Neighbourhood: Parents, elders, and volunteers are coming together to grow local food.
This amazing work is made possible through incredible local teamwork and support from global partners like the British High Commission, Chevening Alumni, and Rotary Club Horizon Luxembourg.
The ultimate goal? Scaling this proof-of-concept into a national movement so every district can grow its own food.

Want to help? You can volunteer with the kids, donate, or spread the word!

BEL-OMBRE COMMUNITIES RALLY AROUND ā€˜GREEN HARVEST’ TO EMPOWER YOUTH AND BOOST FOOD SECURITY

BEL-OMBRE, SEYCHELLES — Local NGO Gaea Seychelles, in partnership with the Bel-Ombre District Administration, has successfully scaled up ā€˜Green Harvest’, an innovative community-based initiative tackling climate change, food security, and youth development.
What began as a small youth vegetable garden called ā€˜Zarden Zanfan’ has transformed into a fully operational site naturally producing food. The project integrates a greenhouse, irrigation, organic waste composting, to teach sustainable living.
Beyond environmental benefits, the project reports significant personal improvements and character building among local youth. By selling harvested crops at local shops, participating children are also gaining critical entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills.
Supported internationally by the Rotary Club Horizon Luxembourg, the Chevening Alumni Fund Programme, and the British High Commission, Green Harvest serves as a national pilot model. Gaea Seychelles aims to eventually replicate this community-led food security framework across every district in the Seychelles. by @gaea.seychelles
