Our Adopt a Marsh August holiday activities have officially started🌱

Last week, we kicked things off with students, teachers and volunteers who joined us to explore Seychelles marshes and learn why these habitats are so important.

Participants took part in hands-on monitoring activities, observing the plants, animals and invertebrates that call marshes home. We were also joined by @gaea.seychelles who introduced everyone to the fascinating world of aquatic invertebrates🔎🦐🌿It was a morning full of learning and fun.

Want to join our upcoming marsh activities? Get in touch with us to find out how you can take part.

🌊🌿 Learning to Read the River

What makes a river healthy? How do we know if our freshwater ecosystems are thriving?

These were just some of the questions explored by enthusiastic young students from Mont Fleuri Primary School during a River Monitoring Training Programme, where they gained hands-on experience in assessing the health of Seychelles' rivers.

From measuring river width, depth and water flow to testing water quality, identifying aquatic plants and animals, and recognising signs of pollution and erosion, participants discovered how science plays a vital role in protecting our freshwater ecosystems.

Healthy rivers are essential for biodiversity, clean water and resilient communities. By equipping young people with these practical skills, we are inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards to better understand and protect Seychelles' precious natural resources.

A heartfelt thank you to our local NGO partner Gaea Seychelles and everyone involved in making this educational field experience a success.

💬 Did you know? Rivers are home to many unique species and are among the most important ecosystems for both people and nature.

Strengthening partnerships for terrapin conservation in Seychelles 🇸🇨

Yesterday, we officially signed MoUs with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Energy (@m_e_c_e_n_r ) and the Marine Conservation Society Seychelles (@marineconservationsocietysey ) for our project, "Community-led Rehabilitation of Key Marsh Habitats for Torti Soupap Conservation on Mahé Island", funded by the National Grants Funding Scheme.

The project aims to rehabilitate key freshwater marsh habitats on Mahé to improve conditions for the Seychelles terrapins (Torti Soupap), while increasing community involvement in conservation and raising awareness of the importance of marshland conservation.

We would also like to acknowledge our project partners who could not attend the event: Gaea Seychelles (@gaea.seychelles ), the Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles (@wcseychelles), and the Ministry of Education and Human Resources (@sey_ministry_of_education ), whose support and collaboration are integral to the success of this initiative.

By joining forces, we can ensure that these ecosystems and the biodiversity that depend on them continue to thrive. A sincere thank you to all partners and stakeholders who joined us for this special occasion and for their commitment to conservation🐢💚🇸🇨

🌱 Vermiponics Training Highlights!🪱

Inspiring the next generation to lead the way in river stewardship through circular agriculture! 💪

With over 75% youth participation, the energy was incredible throughout the two-day training.

🪱Day 1 focused on building a strong foundation, as participants gained theoretical knowledge about vermiponics and its role in sustainable farming and healthy river ecosystems.

🪱Day 2 was all about action — participants got hands-on, built systems, and weren’t afraid to get a little dirty while learning by doing! 🌿💧

From interactive activities to a fun before-and-after quiz, the experience was filled with curiosity, collaboration, and plenty of smiles. It was a powerful reminder that working with nature creates lasting impact. 🌎✨

A sincere thank you to all our partners who made this initiative possible — your support is shaping a greener, more resilient future. 🙌

🌿💧 Empowering Youth for Healthier Rivers! 💧🌿

What an inspiring day out in the field! As part of our ongoing project to empower young people in river management, GAEA Seychelles—together with the Baie Lazare Watershed Committee and Beau Vallon Secondary—hosted an engaging River Health Assessment training 🙌

Our enthusiastic students explored the journey of the Baie Lazare River, flowing from the Dan Sours catchment all the way down to the beautiful Anse Gaulette Beach 🌊 Along the way, they discovered why river health matters—not just for nature, but for our communities too.

One of the highlights? Getting hands-on with the Clarity Tube! 🧪 Students learned how to measure water clarity and better understand what it tells us about the condition of our rivers.

Big thank you to everyone who made this meaningful experience possible 💚 Together, we are nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards!
