Peter Thiel is making people uncomfortable again. The billionaire said, “If you’re evil, you’re at least competent. And if you’re evil, you’re not bad. And therefore maybe you’re actually kind of good because you’re at least getting something done.” He made the comments in Berlin while being honored with the Axel Springer Award, during a conversation about why society moralizes new technology like AI.

If you don’t know the name, you know his work. Thiel cofounded PayPal, was one of Facebook’s earliest investors, and cofounded Palantir, the data company with major contracts across the federal government, including the military and immigration enforcement. His reach in politics runs just as deep. He spoke at the 2016 Republican National Convention in support of Trump, sat on Trump’s transition team, and poured millions into JD Vance’s 2022 Senate run. Vance once worked for Thiel, and today he is the vice president.

So when one of the most connected men in Washington says evil might be kind of good, people are paying attention. What do you think he meant?
