165 years ago, the world’s longest documented living orchid was planted in Singapore’s tropical Botanic Gardens. Open to the public eye, its giant yellow petals with maroon spots traded the cryptic mystery of the Letter Bearing Orchid for the wild camouflage of a Tiger, claiming the iconic nickname. Tiger orchids harbor a true mystery, that one of the split flower strategy. While keeping most blossoms fertile and odorless, the plant structurally alters its bottom flowers to scent organs, just for the bees.
