Videos circulating online purportedly show Dahiya being confronted by different groups of people at a metro station and outside outlets including KFC and Burger King. In one clip, individuals can be heard questioning why he was eating at a mall while protesters faced police action on the streets. Some videos also appear to show people pushing and manhandling him, although the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain unclear.
The clips triggered widespread anger online, with users accusing the spokesperson of abandoning the movement at a crucial moment. Protesters had marched towards Parliament demanding accountability over examination paper leaks and the resignation of the Education Minister. The demonstration later witnessed clashes, lathi-charge and tear gas firing, leaving several protesters and security personnel injured.
Responding to the controversy, Dahiya initially defended himself, questioning why eating during the protest had become an issue. Reports quoted him as saying that participating in the protest was not his “job” and that he was not personally accountable to every protester. His response further intensified the backlash, with many accusing him of being dismissive towards supporters who had travelled to Delhi for the march.
The CJP subsequently announced that Dahiya had been removed as spokesperson and relieved of all official responsibilities. In its statement, the party described his actions as “deeply insensitive” and said such conduct was inconsistent with the values of the movement, particularly when protesters and party workers were allegedly facing violence.
The decision has received mixed reactions. While many users praised the CJP for taking swift action against one of its own representatives, others argued that the controversy should not distract attention from the protesters’ broader demands.
