The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) today called off its protest “with immediate effect” and asked supporters at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to return home. The announcement came in a joint government-CJP press conference this evening, following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan as Union Education Minister. His resignation was the CJP’s core demand over the NEET paper leak.CJP spokespersons Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, flanked by Union ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh at the press conference, told reporters the CJP ended the protest in “good faith” that the government would keep its word on the demands.With one demand already met, the satirical political group’s spokespersons said the government has assured them that police cases filed against students would be withdrawn, no action would be taken against them in future, and maximum compensation as per rules and regulations would be given to the families of students who died by suicide over the NEET paper leak.“We urge all protesters to go home as the government has accepted our demands,” Saurav Das said in the presence of the two Union ministers.Ashutosh Ranka added, “The government has accepted all our demands after 36 days of protest. Jhukti hai duniya, jhukaane vaala chahiye.” Moments later, he announced, “We have done it. Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned.”“There’s no need to be afraid. This is democracy. The Union Cabinet on Friday cleared a tougher anti-paper leak Bill, proposing imprisonment of up to 10 years and fines reaching ₹10 crore for those involved in leaking examination papers. The decision came just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the country’s youth in an unusual midnight video message and promised stronger action against exam fraud.The proposed legislation will amend the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. Under the Cabinet-approved changes, the minimum jail term for people convicted in paper leak cases is proposed to rise from three years to five years, while the maximum punishment will remain 10 years. The highest financial penalty is proposed to be increased to ₹10 crore.The Bill also seeks to establish fast-track courts dedicated to paper leak cases. The government wants trials to be completed and punishment announced within three months, reducing the long delays that often weaken such investigations and leave affected students waiting for justice.The Centre is expected to introduce the amendment Bill in Parliament shortly, with the government indicating that there should be no delay in passing the proposed changes. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the measures were being taken to build a stronger examination system and protect students’ futures.In his midnight address, PM Modi said paper leaks were not an ordinary issue because they directly harmed the dreams and years of preparation of young people. An ambulance staff member is receiving widespread praise after risking his life to carry a seven-month-old baby across a landslide-hit road in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district. A video of the rescue shows rocks continuing to fall from the unstable hillside as the worker moves through the dangerous stretch with the infant held tightly against his chest.The road had been covered with mud, loose stones and large boulders, making it nearly impossible for vehicles to pass. Instead of waiting for the debris to be cleared, the worker reportedly stepped out of the ambulance and carried the child on foot to ensure that the baby could be moved to safety without further delay.In the viral visuals, the man can be seen carefully crossing the slippery debris before running through sections where stones were still tumbling down. Other emergency workers and local residents remained nearby to assist him as he completed the risky rescue. The identity of the ambulance worker has not yet been officially disclosed.The video was shared online on July 23 and quickly attracted appreciation from social media users, who described the worker as a “real hero” and praised him for placing the baby’s safety above his own. Senior IAS officer Naresh Pal Gangwar has been appointed India’s new Higher Education Secretary as nationwide protests led by students and the Cockroach Janata Party continue over the alleged NEET paper leak.Gangwar, a 1994-batch Rajasthan-cadre IAS officer, will replace Vineet Joshi, who has been transferred to the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. Joshi had been serving as Secretary of the Department of Higher Education and was recently also given additional charge of the Department of School Education and Literacy.The change came days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly promised strong action against those involved in examination paper leaks. However, the government’s appointment order did not state that Joshi was transferred because of the controversy or the protests. The reshuffle involved 13 Secretary-level appointments across different ministries.Gangwar has a strong academic and technical background. He completed a BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the University of Roorkee, now known as IIT Roorkee. He later earned an MTech in Communication and Radar Engineering from IIT Delhi and a master’s degree in Economics from the University of Rajasthan.Before being moved to the Education Ministry, Gangwar was serving as Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying. During his career of more than three decades, he has held several senior positions in both the Rajasthan government and the Centre.As Higher Education Secretary, Gangwar will oversee policies concerning central universities, IITs, NITs, the University Grants Commission, scholarships, research programmes and other higher-education institutions.The Centre has also appointed Karnataka-cadre IAS officer T.K. Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk ended his indefinite hunger strike early Friday after Union ministers JP Nadda and Dr Jitendra Singh met him at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. Visuals showed the 59-year-old drinking soup to formally break his fast in the presence of the ministers.Wangchuk had been fasting since June 28 in support of students protesting alleged examination paper leaks and demanding accountability from the Union government. His decision to end the strike came after 26 days, during which his health deteriorated and he was shifted from the protest site to hospital for continuous medical supervision.Nadda and Jitendra Singh visited Wangchuk around midnight and held discussions with him before he agreed to call off the protest. The ministers had also met him earlier at Medanta to enquire about his health as the Centre intensified efforts to resolve the continuing agitation.Before ending his fast, Wangchuk had sought an assurance that young people who participated peacefully in the protests would not face retaliatory or punitive action. He had said that the students must not be targeted merely for raising their voices and exercising their democratic right to protest.Wangchuk had initially been taken to Safdarjung Hospital after doctors warned that his prolonged fast posed serious health risks. Following a petition by his wife, Gitanjali Angmo, the Delhi High Court later permitted his transfer to Medanta Hospital, while directing that he remain under medical supervision and follow the advice of the treating doctors.His decision marks a major turning point in the youth-led protest, which has witnessed demonstrations, clashes and political intervention over the past several days.
