Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from the Council of Ministers on Saturday, 25 July 2026, bringing an abrupt end to a controversy that had simmered for nearly three months and, in its final weeks, spilled onto the streets of Delhi.On the surface, this is a story about one minister quitting over one exam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the government will establish fast-track courts to speed up trials in examination paper leak cases, declaring that those who attempt to destroy the future of India’s youth “will not be spared.” The Prime Minister said there was nothing more important than protecting the welfare and future of young people. He asserted that the proposed courts would ensure swift proceedings and stringent punishment for individuals and organised groups involved in leaking examination papers. The announcement comes amid widespread anger over alleged irregularities and paper leaks in competitive examinations. Student-led demonstrations have intensified in Delhi, with protesters demanding accountability, stronger safeguards for examinations and action against those responsible for compromising the careers of lakhs of aspirants. Modi had earlier described paper leaks as a “grave sin” and said the government was working to make the examination system foolproof. He also called for the strictest possible action against offenders and urged political parties not to treat the future of students as a partisan issue. India already has the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, which treats the leakage of question papers and answer keys as an offence. The law provides imprisonment of three to five years for certain offences, while organised examination fraud can attract five to ten years in jail and a minimum fine of ₹1 crore. However, concerns have continued over delays in investigation and prosecution. The government’s latest move is aimed at ensuring that accused individuals are tried quickly instead of cases remaining pending for years.
India has delivered its finest-ever performance at the International Chemistry Olympiad, with all four members of the national team winning gold medals at the 58th edition held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Debadatta Priyadarshi from Bhubaneswar, Harshit Singla from Mandi Gobindgarh, Kabeer Chhillar from Delhi and Sandeep Kuchi from Hyderabad secured gold medals, completing India’s first-ever all-gold sweep at the prestigious global competition. The historic result placed India jointly at the top of the country-wise medal tally alongside China, Vietnam and Individual Participants Group B, comprising students from Russia. The Olympiad featured 363 students representing 93 countries, making it the largest edition conducted so far. India’s medal winners were placed 26th, 35th, 37th and 39th respectively in the individual rankings. Kabeer Chhillar, the highest-ranked Indian participant, had also topped the JEE Advanced examination earlier this year. The competition tested students through both theoretical and experimental examinations. Participants faced five-hour papers covering advanced chemistry concepts, laboratory analysis, chemical reactions, molecular structures, catalysts, carbon materials and biochemical mixtures. This was India’s 27th appearance at the International Chemistry Olympiad and its best performance since joining the competition. Before this edition, no Indian team had managed to return with gold medals for every participant.
PV Sindhu has delivered the comeback Indian badminton had been waiting for, becoming the first Indian shuttler to win the prestigious Japan Open title. The two-time Olympic medallist produced a commanding performance in Tokyo on Sunday, defeating home favourite and reigning world champion Akane Yamaguchi 21-17, 21-17 in the women’s singles final. The straight-games victory handed Sindhu her maiden Japan Open crown as well as the first BWF Super 750 title of her decorated career. The triumph carried added significance because it marked Sindhu’s first major title in nearly seven years and her first victory over Yamaguchi in four years. Against a packed home crowd supporting the Japanese star, Sindhu remained composed, controlled the longer rallies and repeatedly used her attacking reach to put her opponent under pressure. Her path to the trophy was equally impressive. Sindhu defeated world No. 5 Han Yue in straight games during the tournament before advancing past former world champion Nozomi Okuhara, who withdrew ahead of their quarter-final due to injury. In the semi-final, she was leading Olympic champion Chen Yufei 21-19, 15-10 when the Chinese shuttler retired with a hamstring injury. The victory arrives after a difficult period in which Sindhu faced repeated early exits, injury troubles and growing questions about whether her best years were behind her. Following the historic run, she addressed those doubts, saying people had been asking whether her career was over, but she continued believing in herself. At 31, Sindhu has now added another historic first to a career that already includes an Olympic silver, an Olympic bronze and a World Championship gold. This was not merely another trophy. It was a reminder from one of India’s greatest athletes that champions may struggle, stumble and disappear from the podium—but they should never be counted out.
Anna Hazare’s 2011 indefinite fast at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan demanded a stronger Jan Lokpal law to fight corruption. The movement drew nationwide support and ended after Parliament agreed in principle to key demands. Sonam Wangchuk began an indefinite hunger strike demanding Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over alleged examination irregularities. By July 16, he had reportedly lost over 9 kg, with doctors warning that his health could deteriorate further. Medha Patkar fasted against raising the Sardar Sarovar Dam’s height, arguing that thousands of displaced families had not been properly rehabilitated. Mahatma Gandhi observed a 21-day fast in 1933 to draw attention to caste discrimination and strengthen his campaign against untouchability. Mamata Banerjee’s 26-day fast against farmland acquisition in Singur for the Tata Nano project became a turning point in West Bengal politics. Potti Sriramulu fasted unto death in 1952 demanding a separate Telugu-speaking state. His death triggered protests and led to the creation of Andhra State. Swami Nigamananda died after a 115-day fast against illegal mining along the Ganga near Haridwar, bringing national attention to environmental damage. Bhagat Singh and other revolutionaries launched a hunger strike in Lahore Jail against discriminatory treatment of Indian prisoners. Jatin Das died after fasting for 63 days. Irom Chanu Sharmila’s protest became one of the longest hunger strikes in history. Known as the “Iron Lady of Manipur”, she began fasting in November 2000 after 10 civilians were killed in the Malom incident. Her demand was the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act. Sharmila was repeatedly arrested on charges of attempted suicide and kept alive through nasal force-feeding. She continued her protest for nearly 16 years before ending it on August 9, 2016, to enter electoral politics. AFSPA was not repealed, but her struggle became a symbol of non-violent resistance.
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has removed spokesperson Vijeta Dahiya from his position after viral videos allegedly showed him visiting fast-food outlets while thousands of supporters participated in the party’s ‘Sansad Chalo’ march in Delhi. Videos circulating online purportedly show Dahiya being confronted by different groups of people at a metro station and outside outlets including KFC and Burger King. In one clip, individuals can be heard questioning why he was eating at a mall while protesters faced police action on the streets. Some videos also appear to show people pushing and manhandling him, although the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain unclear. The clips triggered widespread anger online, with users accusing the spokesperson of abandoning the movement at a crucial moment. Protesters had marched towards Parliament demanding accountability over examination paper leaks and the resignation of the Education Minister. The demonstration later witnessed clashes, lathi-charge and tear gas firing, leaving several protesters and security personnel injured. Responding to the controversy, Dahiya initially defended himself, questioning why eating during the protest had become an issue. Reports quoted him as saying that participating in the protest was not his “job” and that he was not personally accountable to every protester. His response further intensified the backlash, with many accusing him of being dismissive towards supporters who had travelled to Delhi for the march. The CJP subsequently announced that Dahiya had been removed as spokesperson and relieved of all official responsibilities. In its statement, the party described his actions as “deeply insensitive” and said such conduct was inconsistent with the values of the movement, particularly when protesters and party workers were allegedly facing violence. The decision has received mixed reactions. While many users praised the CJP for taking swift action against one of its own representatives, others argued that the controversy should not distract attention from the protesters’ broader demands.
Assam is battling a devastating humanitarian crisis after relentless rainfall and overflowing rivers submerged large parts of the state, killing more than 50 people during the ongoing monsoon season and leaving over 100 others missing as floodwaters rapidly entered villages across Upper Assam. Nearly eight lakh people across 16 districts have reportedly been affected, with Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat among the worst-hit areas. Entire settlements have disappeared beneath muddy water, forcing families to abandon their homes with little more than the clothes they were wearing. Roads, bridges and embankments have been damaged, while thousands of hectares of farmland have been submerged, destroying crops and threatening the livelihoods of rural families. The crisis reportedly intensified after extremely heavy rainfall and a cloudburst in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland caused rivers to overflow into Assam. The Brahmaputra and several of its tributaries were flowing above the danger level at multiple locations. More than 6,000 stranded people have been rescued by the Army, NDRF, SDRF, Assam Police, emergency personnel and local authorities. Hundreds of relief camps and distribution centres have been opened, but several villages remain completely cut off, making it difficult to deliver food, drinking water and medicines. Drones are also being used to carry essential supplies to inaccessible areas. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the scale of destruction as “unprecedented” and announced compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of those killed. He admitted that the full extent of the damage remains unknown because several flooded locations are still inaccessible. Despite the enormous scale of the tragedy, many social-media users have questioned why Assam’s suffering has received comparatively limited national attention. However, the disaster has been reported by multiple national and regional media organisations.
