FG Can’t Continue Funding Electricity Tariff Shortfalls While Expected to Provide Power for Every Nigerian — Minister for Power, Joseph Tegbe Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has said the Federal Government can no longer continue to cover electricity tariff shortfalls while expecting to provide power to every Nigerian. Tegbe made the remarks at an energy conference organised by the Harvard Business School Association of Nigeria in Lagos on Friday, where energy experts discussed the country’s electricity challenges. He identified poor revenue collection, inadequate metering, accumulated debts owed to power generation companies and weaknesses in the electricity market as factors affecting reliable power supply. “Commercially viable pricing will work where the supplier can actually collect his money and get paid. There’s no sense in commercially viable pricing if you don’t collect money,” he said. The minister disclosed that the government was reviewing the electricity market structure and tariff assumptions with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission. He also questioned the continued operation of the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET) model, under which the government-owned company buys electricity in bulk and sells it to distribution companies. “NBET ought to have been sunset about five years ago, and I’m telling you my own plan, at the end of the day, is to move from that model. That model will not help Nigeria. We can’t keep covering tariff shortfalls and think we’ll give power to every Nigerian,” Tegbe said. He added that the government was planning to move towards bilateral electricity agreements, allowing power producers to supply customers or distribution companies under agreed commercial terms.

Embracing solitude and the art of self-documentation. There is a quiet confidence that comes with navigating spaces alone, tripod in hand. My book remained mostly closed today; the surrounding aesthetics and ambient energy were simply too captivating to look away from.
