The world is getting more of its electricity from renewables but less from nuclear power. If the world is to reduce its carbon emissions and tackle climate change, it needs to move away from fossil fuels to low-carbon power. There are two key sources of low-carbon electricity: renewables — which include solar, wind, hydropower, and others — and nuclear power. While rapid growth in solar and wind has increased the amount of electricity coming from renewables, a lack of enthusiasm for nuclear means it’s playing a shrinking role in the global mix. In the chart, you can see the share of global electricity coming from fossil fuels, renewables, and nuclear since 1985. Since 2000, nuclear and renewables have followed very different trajectories. Back then, both accounted for a similar share of global electricity. But in 2025, renewables made up more than three times as much: 34% compared to 9%. The total amount of electricity produced by nuclear plants is about the same as it was two decades ago. But because the world produces much more electricity overall, its share of the electricity mix has declined. (written by Hannah Ritchie and Pablo Arriagada)

Day 6 of the #Halloween Pumpkin Hunt has arrived - along with another pumpkin to find!
🚨James Estep, 35, of Mesa, Arizona, has been sentenced to nearly 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to four counts of s*xual assault and one count of attempted s*xual assault. Prosecutors described him as a serial r*pist linked to attacks on multiple women in the East Valley between roughly 2018 and 2023. One case involved Estep offering a 15-year-old girl a ride at a light-rail station, then punching and strangling her during the assault. He had been arrested twice earlier in 2023; prosecutors declined to proceed at those points due to insufficient evidence. Estep accepted a plea deal avoiding being sentenced to hundreds of years in prison. DNA evidence and other links connected him across cases. He will also face lifetime probation. He represented himself in court and never apologized. Public posts on his Facebook page include selfies that confirm his identity and a pro-Trump 4th of July post. The sentence includes credit for time served; he is expected to be released around 2055 if the terms are served in full.
