Carbs are not the reason you’re struggling to lose fat.
They’re your body’s preferred source of energy and play a huge role in:
- Fueling workouts
- Supporting muscle growth
- Aiding recovery
- Keeping your brain functioning optimally
So why do low-carb diets often seem to work?
When you reduce carbohydrate intake, your body uses up its glycogen stores. Glycogen is stored with water, so as it’s depleted, you lose water too. That’s why the scales often drop quickly in the first week or two—but that’s not the same as losing body fat.
The real issue is that many processed carbohydrate foods—pastries, biscuits, sweets, sugary drinks and some refined snacks—are highly palatable and easy to overeat. If that pushes you into a calorie surplus over time, that’s what leads to fat gain.
Instead of fearing carbs:
- Pair them with protein and fibre.
- Choose wholegrain or minimally processed sources where possible.
- Build balanced meals.
- Be mindful of portion sizes.
