I got broken up with last week, and in my reflections since, I’ve realized that the OCD from my youth never left me; it just got quieter. Here is my essay on listening to my body.
“My body told me the answer, but I chose to ignore it. The signs came in endless fatigue and a visit with a familiar friend – my self-diagnosed OCD. I have two friends with OCD, and when they describe their present symptoms, it doesn’t feel like the experience resonates with me. But in this last spiral, I was quickly reminded that just because your situation looks different, it doesn’t mean that your compulsions don’t exist. Perhaps I was just ignoring them, hoping that they would fade soon, and convinced that my constant need for reassurance was more a personality trait than a compulsion.”
