A University of Michigan-led research team has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to advance a project that will use artificial intelligence to dramatically improve scientists’ ability to observe how materials behave under stress and in extreme environments.
Led by Ashley Bucsek, associate professor of mechanical engineering, the project, “AI-enabled real-time reconstructions and interpretation for rapid 3D X-ray diffraction and imaging of materials under stress and extreme environments,” is among the projects selected through the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission: Transforming Science and Energy with AI initiative.
“We are honored to represent the University of Michigan as part of the DOE’s Genesis Mission,” Bucsek said. “Genesis is a unique opportunity to combine forces across academia, national laboratories, and high-performance computing facilities to create step changes in our understanding of advanced materials. By combining U-M’s strengths in diffraction-based materials characterization with expertise from Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Advanced Photon Source, our team aims to help redefine how quickly we can design materials for critical national needs.”
By uniting government, industry, academia, and philanthropy, the Genesis Mission is accelerating breakthroughs in energy, scientific discovery, and national security through a new platform that combines artificial intelligence, supercomputing, quantum systems, and advanced scientific instruments.
Representatives from the University of Michigan participated in the Genesis Mission Summit on July 22 in Washington, D.C., where the initiative and the selected projects were highlighted.
