A University of Michigan-led research team has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to advance a project that will use artificial intelligence to dramatically improve scientists’ ability to observe how materials behave under stress and in extreme environments.

Led by Ashley Bucsek, associate professor of mechanical engineering, the project, “AI-enabled real-time reconstructions and interpretation for rapid 3D X-ray diffraction and imaging of materials under stress and extreme environments,” is among the projects selected through the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission: Transforming Science and Energy with AI initiative.

“We are honored to represent the University of Michigan as part of the DOE’s Genesis Mission,” Bucsek said. “Genesis is a unique opportunity to combine forces across academia, national laboratories, and high-performance computing facilities to create step changes in our understanding of advanced materials. By combining U-M’s strengths in diffraction-based materials characterization with expertise from Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Advanced Photon Source, our team aims to help redefine how quickly we can design materials for critical national needs.”

By uniting government, industry, academia, and philanthropy, the Genesis Mission is accelerating breakthroughs in energy, scientific discovery, and national security through a new platform that combines artificial intelligence, supercomputing, quantum systems, and advanced scientific instruments.

Representatives from the University of Michigan participated in the Genesis Mission Summit on July 22 in Washington, D.C., where the initiative and the selected projects were highlighted.

Electric vehicle batteries could last twice as long, preventing costly replacement, with a new diagnostic framework and adaptive thermal management, according to a study led by University of Michigan Mechanical Engineers.

The diagnostic approach is designed to work with voltage and charging data that today’s battery management systems already collect, rather than requiring new sensors inside the battery. It is best suited for lower-power Level 1 and Level 2 charging, which is common at homes, workplaces, and public parking areas, and is expected to cover most EV charging demand.

“Battery management systems today often use fixed voltage, charge, and temperature thresholds. Our work opens a path toward management systems with active diagnostics that can look inside the cell, distinguish how different materials are aging, and adapt operation accordingly,” said Anna Stefanopoulou, U-M professor of mechanical engineering and senior author of the study.

A team of U-M Mechanical Engineers was awarded the William Elgin Wickenden Award for a study examining collaborative skill-building among engineering students and professionals. The award is presented annually by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) to the author(s) of the best paper published in the Journal of Engineering Education.

The study compares how engineering students and professionals experience collaboration, offering insights into the perceived "skill gap" between the two groups. It is part of the team's broader effort to examine students' and practitioners' understanding of crucial sociotechnical skills.

An analysis of student and professional narratives revealed that students' "sub-optimal" collaboration beliefs stem from the organizational limitations they often face, such as short timelines and single-discipline teams.

The findings can help educators shape curricula that could better prepare students to succeed in professional roles after graduation. 

"We live in a system that is constrained from an educational perspective, and that's okay," said Shanna Daly, U-M ME Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and co-author of the study. "But what we can do is support intentional reflection with well-crafted questions and information that facilitate students in understanding what the differences in collaboration might be."
