BREAKING! Lead story in the British Titanic Society summer edition of the illustrious Atlantic Daily Bulletin. The Titanic Memorial Lighthouse: Restoration Project Progress.

When the restoration campaign for the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse began, the Atlantic Daily Bulletin (Autumn 2020) article closed with a passage from the New York Times, published at the lighthouse’s unveiling ceremony in April 1913 — exactly one year after the tragedy:

“The man in the street will adjust his watch, the sailor in the harbour will set his chronometer, and the binoculars at Sandy Hook will be trained on the glinting flash. And how many in the throng will remember, as they look, that once on a midsummer night a boat called the Titanic sank to the bottom of the sea carrying her freight of human cargo with her?”

More than a century later, the eyes of New Yorkers are once again raised to the world’s first memorial to the 1,496 victims of the most renowned maritime disaster in history. In May 2026, scaffolding was at last removed and the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse was revealed by the South Street Seaport Museum — an unveiling without fanfare, remembrance, or descendants present.

On July 1, 2022, the New York Times published a landmark article by Streetscapes editor John Freeman Gill, drawing global public attention to a “Neglected Titanic Memorial: Like Their Graves Have Not Been Tended.”

On the 113th anniversary of the sinking, April 15, 2025, Mayor Eric Adams presented a Citation from the City of New York to Friends of Titanic Memorial Lighthouse Restoration, honoring the annual ceremony at which descendants gather to lay wreaths and offer remembrance.

Our sincere thanks to the Board and Members of the @britishtitanicsociety for supporting this project from the beginning.
