Descendants petition Seaport Museum to approve landmarking world’s first Titanic Memorial and record all 1,496 victim names • Mayoral Citation 2025 🏅
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Honored to receive today from the Office of the Mayor of the City of New York, this Citation:

'Whereas, As a former colonial port city that evolved into a modern, global metropolis, New York has an extraordinary history, and we are grateful to the diverse people and organizations that are dedicated to preserving the milestone events, significant buildings, sites, and places of interest that have shaped the illustrious past of the five boroughs. Today, I am pleased to join the Friends of Titanic Memorial Lighthouse Restoration as it hosts a remembrance ceremony to commemorate the 113 anniversary of the sinking of the Royal Mail Ship (RMS) Titanic.

Whereas, In 1912, RMS Titanic was a brand new British ocean liner operated by the White Star Line and was hailed as "unsinkable." However, the luxurious vessel tragically sank in the early hours of April 15, on the fourth day of her maiden voyage, which began in Southampton, England and was followed by stops in Cherbourg, France and Queenstown (now Cobh), Ireland on its route to New York City. After striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic, approximately 1,500 of the estimated 2,224 passengers drowned in the dark, frigid ocean waters-making the incident one of the deadliest peacetime sinkings of a single ship. Those fortunate enough to survive by boarding lifeboats were rescued by the crew of RMS Carpathia and taken to New York. The disaster drew international public attention, spurred impactful changes in maritime safety regulations, and inspired an enduring legacy in literature, film, and popular culture.

Whereas, New York's Titanic Memorial Lighthouse was unveiled on April 15, 1913, one year after the heartbreaking catastrophe. It was originally located on the roof of the Seamen's Church Institute at 25 South Street in Lower Manhattan, but when the group moved to a different building in 1968, the lighthouse was donated to the South Street Seaport Museum and installed at Fulton and Pearl streets, where the 60-foot-tall structure remains a solemn tribute to those who lost their lives on that fateful day, as well as to the courage and resilience of the survivors...' by @titaniclighthouse

Why does the world’s first Titanic Memorial have no victim’s names?

Why are the 1,496 victims from 28 nations not recorded and respected?

Descendants petitioned Reverend Mark Nestlehutt, SCI President and Executive Director who never consulted the victim's families in writing their families Memorial plaque.

Dear Consul General @ErikUllenhag —

We invite you to support descendant's petition to Jonathan Boulware, (left) President and CEO of the South Seaport Museum to approve landmarking the world’s first Titanic Memorial and record all 1,496 victim names on a plaque.

As you know, 44 Swedish immigrants perished on the RMS Titanic alongside hundreds of others from 28 nations.

Will @swedennewyork remember these victims?

Thank you.

Wreaths have been laid, and the names of the 1,496 victims recorded over a 7-year campaign by descendants of victims and survivors to respect the world's first RMS Titanic memorial.

The wildly incorrect Wikipedia count of the number of Titanic victims: ‘...resulting in the deaths of up to 1,635 people...’ is now edited to the accurate total of 1,496.

This number is agreed upon by all respected Titanic historians.

NEW WIKI:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passengers_of_the_Titanic

OLD WIKI:

en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sinking_of_the_Titanic&action=edit

Will the Seaport Museum now add this number of victims to the Memorial plaque?

Princess Elettra Marconi Statement:

'My father, Guglielmo Marconi, gave the world the gift of practical long-distance wireless communication—and it was that very gift which, on the night of 14th–15th April 1912, carried the desperate messages for help from RMS Titanic across the dark waters of the North Atlantic.

On behalf of my father's memory and our family, I wish to express our profound and abiding acknowledgement of the scale of human suffering that the sinking of the Titanic brought upon so many innocent souls. Those 1,496 lives lost were not statistics. They were mothers, fathers, children, newly-weds, dreamers—people who had done nothing more than place their trust in a voyage. Their absence did not end with the sea. It echoed forward through generations: in the children who grew up without parents, in the families fractured beyond repair, in the empty chairs that were never spoken of and yet were never forgotten. The emotional devastation visited upon those families was immeasurable, and it is a wound that time alone could not fully heal.

We must not overlook, either, the survivors — those who were pulled from the lifeboats into a world that expected them to be grateful simply for being alive. Many carried the weight of that night for the rest of their days: the sounds, the silence, the guilt of having lived when others did not. Their suffering was quieter, but no less real.

While I am not myself a descendant of any of those who sailed aboard Titanic, I feel a deep and personal connection to her story through my father's legacy. It is therefore with wholehearted sincerity that I lent my full support to the campaign to restore the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse — the world's first memorial dedicated to the 1,496 victims of that tragedy. That lighthouse stood as a beacon of remembrance when it was first erected, and it must stand again. To restore it is to honour a promise made long ago to those who were lost, and to those left behind.

Some stories are too important to let fade. This is one of them.'

– Princess Elettra Marconi Giovanelli, daughter of Guglielmo Marconi, whose telegraph installed on RMS Titanic saved so many lives.

We are delighted to share this video message from the Princess Elettra Marconi to Mayor Mamdani @nycmayor

My name is Princess Elettra Marconi Giovanelli.

I am the daughter of Guglielmo Marconi, whose wireless telegraph installed on the RMS Titanic saved so many lives.

I am writing to you today in support of something that is long overdue.

I stand with the descendants of the victims and survivors of the RMS Titanic.

They are calling for all 1,496 names of those who lost their lives to be recorded — permanently — on a memorial plaque.

Every name. Not forgotten. Not omitted. Every single one.

I also support their call on New York City Landmarks, and the Trustees of the Seaport Museum, to begin the landmarking process for the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse.

This lighthouse holds a remarkable distinction as the world’s first memorial ever built to the victims of the Titanic. It deserves the protection that landmarking provides.

The families ask only for an act of dignity — of saying, clearly and permanently: these lives mattered.

I hope you will add your voice, and the weight of your office, in support of their request.

Thank you for your consideration — and for your leadership.

—

A powerful message respecting both victims and survivors. Her letter and video will be shared with the Mayor.

As we move forward with the protection of the Titanic wrecksite and artifacts the wishes of descendants will be primary above all else.

BREAKING! Lead story in the British Titanic Society summer edition of the illustrious Atlantic Daily Bulletin. The Titanic Memorial Lighthouse: Restoration Project Progress.

When the restoration campaign for the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse began, the Atlantic Daily Bulletin (Autumn 2020) article closed with a passage from the New York Times, published at the lighthouse’s unveiling ceremony in April 1913 — exactly one year after the tragedy:

“The man in the street will adjust his watch, the sailor in the harbour will set his chronometer, and the binoculars at Sandy Hook will be trained on the glinting flash. And how many in the throng will remember, as they look, that once on a midsummer night a boat called the Titanic sank to the bottom of the sea carrying her freight of human cargo with her?”

More than a century later, the eyes of New Yorkers are once again raised to the world’s first memorial to the 1,496 victims of the most renowned maritime disaster in history. In May 2026, scaffolding was at last removed and the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse was revealed by the South Street Seaport Museum — an unveiling without fanfare, remembrance, or descendants present.

On July 1, 2022, the New York Times published a landmark article by Streetscapes editor John Freeman Gill, drawing global public attention to a “Neglected Titanic Memorial: Like Their Graves Have Not Been Tended.”

On the 113th anniversary of the sinking, April 15, 2025, Mayor Eric Adams presented a Citation from the City of New York to Friends of Titanic Memorial Lighthouse Restoration, honoring the annual ceremony at which descendants gather to lay wreaths and offer remembrance.

Our sincere thanks to the Board and Members of the @britishtitanicsociety for supporting this project from the beginning.
