Join us for the final weekend of Closer, a solo exhibition of paintings by Lydia Avsec.

Featuring a new body of abstract paintings, the exhibition explores the shifting relationship between distance and intimacy through richly layered compositions inspired by the colours, textures, and atmospheres of the natural world.

Built through repeated cycles of marking, obscuring, and reworking, Avsec’s paintings move fluidly between the microscopic and the expansive. Suggesting cellular structures, weather systems, terrain, growth, and light without settling into direct representation, the works invite viewers into an experience where perception is continually in flux. From afar, the paintings appear immersive and atmospheric. Up close, they dissolve into intricate networks of gesture, texture, and accumulated surface.

The exhibition’s title reflects this duality. Closer speaks to both physical proximity and emotional longing, asking viewers to approach the work while acknowledging that certainty remains elusive. Forms emerge and recede depending on where one stands, rewarding sustained attention with ever-changing visual relationships. Through repetition and accumulation, Avsec creates contemplative spaces that hold the tension between presence and absence, attachment and separation.

Drawing on a background in graphic design, Avsec balances intuitive mark-making with a refined understanding of composition, colour, and visual rhythm. The resulting paintings combine expressive freedom with structural precision, creating works that feel both carefully composed and organically alive.
