This weekend is the final weekend to see these paintings by @lydiaavsec.art at THIS. As you can see, we’ve sold three of the seven works from the exhibition! These works take three to 6 months each to paint. They consist of tiny marks made one by one using palette knives. At first glance, they appear serene. But as you get closer, the obsessive frenzy of mark making is revealed. @this_______________________ is open Fridays 12-6, Saturdays 12-5 and Sundays 12-4. #vancouverart by @this_______________________

Join us for the final weekend of Closer, a solo exhibition of paintings by Lydia Avsec. Featuring a new body of abstract paintings, the exhibition explores the shifting relationship between distance and intimacy through richly layered compositions inspired by the colours, textures, and atmospheres of the natural world.Built through repeated cycles of marking, obscuring, and reworking, Avsec’s paintings move fluidly between the microscopic and the expansive. Suggesting cellular structures, weather systems, terrain, growth, and light without settling into direct representation, the works invite viewers into an experience where perception is continually in flux. From afar, the paintings appear immersive and atmospheric. Up close, they dissolve into intricate networks of gesture, texture, and accumulated surface. The exhibition’s title reflects this duality. Closer speaks to both physical proximity and emotional longing, asking viewers to approach the work while acknowledging that certainty remains elusive. Forms emerge and recede depending on where one stands, rewarding sustained attention with ever-changing visual relationships. Through repetition and accumulation, Avsec creates contemplative spaces that hold the tension between presence and absence, attachment and separation.Drawing on a background in graphic design, Avsec balances intuitive mark-making with a refined understanding of composition, colour, and visual rhythm. The resulting paintings combine expressive freedom with structural precision, creating works that feel both carefully composed and organically alive.Lydia Avsec is a Victoria-based painter, graphic designer, and illustrator. She is the founder of Copilot Design, an award-winning boutique design studio established in 2009, and has worked with clients throughout Vancouver’s arts community as well as studios and agencies in Ottawa, Calgary, and Vancouver.@lydiaavsec.art 108 e Broadway (alley entrance) Vancouver, BCOpen Fridays 12-6Saturdays 12-5Sundays 12-4 by @this_______________________

Drifting48"x40" / acrylic on wood panel / SOLDPart of my solo exhibition: CloserContinues this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, please visit!@this_______________________ The title Closer speaks both to physical proximity and emotional longing. The paintings ask the viewer to move nearer in order to fully experience them, while simultaneously holding a sense of distance and instability. Forms emerge and disappear depending on where one stands; clarity is never fixed, only changing through attention and time.Big thanks to the new collector for coming out to the show and for your support. by @this_______________________

THIS Gallery invites contemporary artists of all disciplines to submit work that subverts the traditional “look-but-don’t-touch” gallery paradigm. Because this exhibition centers on physical interaction, all submitted works must be structurally sound and designed to be repeatedly touched, caressed, or held by the public.* Eligibility: Open to all contemporary artists, craftspersons, and makers residing in Canada.* Media: All mediums welcome (sculpture, textiles, ceramics, interactive tech, high-durability mixed media, wearable art, etc.). Works can be freestanding, suspended or wall-hung.* Durability Requirement: Artworks must withstand constant physical handling for the 10-day duration of the exhibition. Fragile, sharp, or highly toxic materials will not be accepted.* How to Apply: Submit up to 3 works via our online form (link in bio). Please include an artist statement detailing the physical interaction you intend for the viewer. In the traditional gallery space, an invisible barrier separates the viewer from the artwork. We are taught to look, admire, and maintain our distance, bound by the rigid ethos of “Do Not Touch.” This exhibition deliberately shatters that boundary.By stripping away the velvet ropes, glass cases, and disciplinary signs, we invite you to experience contemporary art with your whole body. This is not a space of passive observation, but one of radical welcome. Here, your hands are your guides. You are warmly encouraged to reach out, trace every contour, feel the varied textures, and even hold the artwork in your hands.By centering the sense of touch, this exhibition subverts the visual monopoly of the art world. It transforms the gallery from a clinical viewing room into an intimate, shared space of physical connection. Every piece of contemporary work on display has been created with the visitor’s presence in mind.Help us build an intimate, shared space of physical connection. by @this_______________________

She is the founder of Copilot Design, an award-winning boutique design studio established in 2009, and has worked with clients throughout Vancouver’s arts community as well as studios and agencies in Ottawa, Calgary, and Vancouver.
