The title Closer speaks both to physical proximity and emotional longing. The paintings ask the viewer to move nearer in order to fully experience them, while simultaneously holding a sense of distance and instability. Forms emerge and disappear depending on where one stands; clarity is never fixed, only changing through attention and time.

@kayleylamlamb was one of the selected filmmakers in our A Visual Letter to Your Animal Mini Film Festival. To celebrate our first anniversary, she created this lovely reel for us, opening an envelope filled with memories from our first year.

One of (@wcculturallab ) West Coast Cultural Lab’s hopes is to create a place where artists can be seen, share their creativity, and have a chance to shine.

At this stage, everyone behind the Lab is volunteering their time, energy, and skills. We hope that one day, with funding and support, we’ll be able to give back to the artists who make these projects possible.

Before we grow to that scale, we are already deeply thankful.

Thank you to every artist who trusted us with your work, every partner who opened a door, every volunteer who gave their time, and every person who supported us in ways both big and small.

This reel opens more than an envelope. It opens the memories of everything we have built together in our first year.

And this is only the beginning.

✨ Lydia Avsec: Closer ✨

🖼️ THIS Gallery is pleased to present Closer, a solo exhibition by Victoria-based artist @lydiaavsec.art. Through richly layered abstract paintings inspired by the colours, textures, and atmospheres of the natural world, Avsec explores the shifting relationship between distance and intimacy.

🖼️ From afar, the paintings appear atmospheric and immersive. Up close, they reveal intricate networks of gesture, texture, and accumulated surface that reward sustained looking.

🖼️ Join the opening reception on Saturday, July 18, from 12–4 pm. The artist will be in attendance, and everyone is welcome.

I did it! I painted today. At the eleventh hour, I finally did some painting.

Overall, I’ve been very satisfied with my residency. I got a lot done and it was nice to come to the studio nearly every day. I’ve been pushing myself, but also giving myself grace.

I highly recommend taking time to fully commit to your art practice. Even if you spend 90 percent of that time getting organized and settled.

Visit me Saturday, July 11 to see what I’ve been up to and grab something from my studio sale. I’ll be at @this_______________________ from 12-5.

How to get lots done, but not what you planned.

Day 10 of my 12 day residency and here’s where we are. My studio is very organized, and so is the gift shop.

Luckily, I’ve been seed beading every evening when I get home.

Day 8 of my self-directed residency! I got a lot done today, but again…none of it involved making art.

My new studio is looking pretty good though. At the beginning of my residency I had the idea to set up my studio in what had been the storage area.

This is the result.

I’ll have the door open this Saturday from noon to 5 pm if you want to come see what I dragged out of storage, visit the gift shop, or have a chat.
