Crypto is doing something to your nervous system that nobody talks about.
The 2023 study “Buy High, Sell Low” interviewed active traders and found what looks less like investing and more like a slow-motion nervous system rewiring. Constant checking, emotional dysregulation and a dopamine loop that runs on green candles and eats you alive on red ones.
A Finnish population survey found crypto traders reported significantly higher psychological distress and loneliness than monthly stock investors and non-investors. Not a little higher. Significantly higher. Another study (Steinmetz, 2023) found that trading frequency correlates directly with symptoms of depression and anxiety. The more you check, the worse it gets.
Nobody talks about this because “I lost money on ETH” is fine but “the market broke something inside me” doesn’t fit in a group chat.
The nervous system doesn’t distinguish between “portfolio down 40%” and “actual danger.” It just runs the same threat response, over and over, at 6am, in the shower, during dinner. For years.
If you’ve been in this space long enough to know exactly what day 1 versus day 400 feels like - you’re not being dramatic. There’s real research on what this does to people.
Small things help. Fewer notifications. Longer time horizons. Not opening the app in bed. And knowing that whatever you actually own is safe, because “did I get hacked” spiking your cortisol at 2am is a whole separate breakdown you don’t need on top of the market one.
Take care of your nervous system out here.
