Why is the glacier covered in black stripes?
Those dark bands aren’t dirt. They’re layers of volcanic ash that settled on the glacier during past eruptions.
Each layer marks a different eruption, preserving part of Iceland’s volcanic history within the ice.
As the glacier flows and fractures, these ash layers are stretched and folded, creating the dramatic patterns visible across its surface.
Did you know a glacier could preserve the history of volcanoes?
