A waterfall hidden inside the landscape.

Kvernufoss sits in a narrow gorge near Skógar and remains almost completely out of view until the final part of the walk.

What makes it memorable is the setting: a quiet gorge, steep green walls, and a waterfall that feels far more secluded than nearby Skógafoss.

It is also possible to walk behind the falling water, which was one of the best parts of the visit.

Follow the trail into the gorge and expect wet, slippery ground near the waterfall. by @blissfulspacetimeo

Skógafoss drops around 60 metres from a former sea cliff, creating a wall of water and mist that becomes more powerful the closer you walk towards it.

What makes it especially worth visiting is that you can experience it from two completely different perspectives: directly from the base, then from the viewpoint reached by the staircase beside it.

The setting may look familiar. This is where Jon Snow and Daenerys landed during their dragon flight beyond Winterfell. by @blissfulspacetimeo

One road. Endless green.

The gentle hills around Vík were shaped by repeated volcanic eruptions and later sculpted by glaciers during the Ice Age.

Today they’re covered in thick moss and grass, creating a landscape that feels surprisingly peaceful in one of Iceland’s most geologically active regions. by @blissfulspacetimeo

$Why is the glacier covered in black stripes? Those dark bands aren’t dirt. They’re layers of volcanic ash that settled on the glacier during past eruptions. Each layer marks a different eruption, preserving part of Iceland’s volcanic history within the ice. As the glacier flows and fractures, these ash layers are stretched and folded, creating the dramatic patterns visible across its surface. Did you know a glacier could preserve the history of volcanoes? by @blissfulspacetimeo$

A frozen river that never stops moving.

Svínafellsjökull may look frozen in time, but it is constantly flowing downhill under its own weight, slowly reshaping the landscape.

Unlike a river of water, a glacier moves so slowly that its motion is almost impossible to notice with the naked eye, yet it continuously carves valleys, transports rock, and opens new crevasses.

Its constantly changing surface has made Svínafellsjökull one of Iceland’s most closely studied glaciers, helping scientists better understand glacier dynamics and the effects of a warming climate.

It’s hard to believe something that looks so still is constantly in motion. by @blissfulspacetimeo

$Welcome to Dr. Mann’s planet A frozen world of fractured ice, dark ridges, and deep crevasses; silent, hostile, and seemingly far beyond Earth. But the good news is you don’t have to travel through a wormhole to reach here. This is Svínafellsjökull, one of Iceland’s most dramatic outlet glaciers, a place where you can see ice moving, fracturing, and reshaping the landscape. by @blissfulspacetimeo$
