The working day may finish at 5pm, but for many women, the demands on their nervous system continue long after.

During our International Women’s Day panel earlier this year, HumanOS Personal Development and Somatic Breathwork Coach Olivia Wynne (@oa_coaching) discussed the limited opportunity many women have to recover properly from workplace stress.

A demanding day at work can involve sustained pressure, constant decision-making and prolonged periods of high alert. For many women, that is followed immediately by parenting, caring responsibilities, household tasks or supporting others.

There is often very little time to pause between one set of demands and the next.

When the body does not have an opportunity to decompress, stress can remain elevated. Over time, this can affect sleep, concentration, emotional regulation, energy and performance.

Olivia’s advice is to identify small, realistic opportunities to regulate throughout the day and to experiment with different approaches.

Meditation can be effective, but it will not suit everyone. Some people with anxiety may find breathwork more accessible, others a walk, others time with friends, it needs to be indivual.

Recovery is personal. The most useful approach is the one that fits the individual, their circumstances and the time they genuinely have available.

This is why HumanOS gives employees access to personalised coaching, practical tools and on-demand support across mental, physical and emotional health, helping people find the right approach for their individual needs.

What helps you transition out of work and into the rest of your day?
