President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil surged to re-election on Sunday, according to official preliminary results. His victory snapped a string of seven straight wins by right-wing leaders in Latin America over the last 18 months and suggested that the region’s left-wing forces still wield some influence.

Lula fended off a challenge from Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of the former president who had attempted a coup four years ago, after a judge on Brazil’s electoral court ordered that polls remain open two extra hours because of transportation delays and bad weather.

The candidates offered starkly different views on major issues that included fighting organized crime and revitalizing a sluggish economy. The outcome could reshape Brazil’s trajectory on many divisive issues for years to come because the president will have the right to fill four open seats on the country’s powerful Supreme Court, which has 11 seats in total.
