The Dumbbell Nebula (M27), set against a sea of stars, 1,360 lightyears away in the constellation Vulpecula. At its core is an aging white dwarf star, which released huge clouds of gas during its transformation. Intense ultraviolet radiation from this hot star ionises the clouds of gas and causes them to glow red in regions packed with hydrogen and nitrogen, and green / blue in regions filled with oxygen. One day, the same thing will happen to our sun. It's a bright and compact object which can be easily observed through a small telescope or binoculars.
