I took this picture of a region around one the brightest stars in the night sky, Sadr, in the constellation Cygnus. While Sadr is easily visible to the naked eye, deep sky imaging reveals these huge structures of emission nebulae (IC 1318) and dark foreground dust (LDN 889) surrounding it. You can also see two open star clusters in the image, NGC 6910 near the top, and M 29 toward the bottom. Swipe for the full frame view!

Here's another deep sky image looking through our Milky Way around the constellation Cepheus. It shows a faint indication of the Cave Nebula (Sh2-155) to the left, and another tiny faint nebula, Sh2-158 at the top right. Some interesting structures of dark foreground dust break up the dense star field in the centre.

I took this widefield shot of a region of the constellation Cepheus, featuring a few interesting objects.

Swipe to see zoomed in views of:

2. The open star cluster M 52 (messed up the framing on this one!) and The Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635), a glowing sphere of expanding gas being propelled by intense stellar winds from a hot star at its centre.

3. The open star cluster NGC 7510

4. A knot of emission nebulosity Sh2-159

5. A faint hint of The Lobster Claw emission nebula Sh2-157

6. Full frame without star removal, showing the rich Milky Way starfield.

This my first success at auto guiding and dithering which really helped the image quality with such short integration time.

The Elephant's Trunk Nebula inside the massive IC 1396 emission nebula located in the constellation Cepheus. It's huge but quite diffuse and difficult to pick up on my stock dslr. Definitely some poor tracking on this night causing some struggles with walking noise during processing, with some extra challenge thrown in by the warm and bright summer night. There are nevertheless a lot of interesting dark dust structures and brighter clouds of emission nebulosity to see in the image.

Some cropped in highlights of The North America Nebula (IC 7000)... 1st, the Cygnus Wall located around the Mexico and Central America region. 2nd, the bright open star cluster (NGC 6997) roughly around the Great Lakes. 3rd, The Pelican Nebula (IC 5070) separated to the east by a dark cloud of dust.

The North America Nebula (IC 7000) is a huge star forming region of our Milky Way in the constellation Cygnus. It is separated from The Pelican Nebula (IC 5070) on the right by a dark cloud of foreground dust (LDN 935). The weather conditions were great for this project, and this beautiful result was a pleasant surprise!

The western portion of the Veil Nebula Complex in Cygnus, featuring the Witch's Broom on the right (C34) alongside the bright star 52 Cygni, and Pickering's Triangle (NGC6979) at the top left. This is a partner image to my previous Eastern Veil Nebula, and shows the other side of an expanding bubble of glowing ionised gas released from a supernova.

The Eastern Veil Nebula (C33) in the constellation Cygnus is part of a supernova remnant known as the Veil Nebula Complex. It's a huge cloud of expanding ionised gas released when a massive star exploded between 5,000 and 20,000 years ago. Really happy with how this one came out, probably my most satisfying project to date. Follow the page to see the Western Veil Nebula, soon to come! ✨

The Dumbbell Nebula (M27), set against a sea of stars, 1,360 lightyears away in the constellation Vulpecula. At its core is an aging white dwarf star, which released huge clouds of gas during its transformation. Intense ultraviolet radiation from this hot star ionises the clouds of gas and causes them to glow red in regions packed with hydrogen and nitrogen, and green / blue in regions filled with oxygen. One day, the same thing will happen to our sun. It's a bright and compact object which can be easily observed through a small telescope or binoculars.

M106 and friends! A rich galaxy field in the constellation Canes Venatici. Swipe for labelled view of 12 visible galaxies, and some cropped views. M106 is the largest, and contains a supermassive black hole at its core, ejecting powerful jets of gas which cause intense X-ray and radio emission. It has an intense spiral core, surrounded by a much fainter outer disk. I also like the dark dust lane visible in the side-on galaxy NGC4217. Some difficulties handling walking noise in the processing with this one due to off calibration frames, forcing me to aggressively clip the black point.

The beautiful side-on spiral galaxy M101 (The Pinwheel Galaxy) in the constellation Ursa Major. 22 million lightyears away, with a diameter 3x larger than The Milky Way. The bright regions in the outer arms are huge clouds of ionised hydrogen gas forming distant new stars. Its asymmetry is the result of tidal forces from its nearby companion dwarf galaxies of the M101 group. I spotted 6 companions in the background of the second uncropped widefield shot. Really happy with this project after combining two nights of data.
