Well I didn't intend to drag this out over three weeks, but here's another post on the fountain! These two marble medallions were carved in my shop and placed in recess pockets cut in the pink marble.
The theme of this entire patio, (there's always a theme at Old Parkland!), is based on Greek mythology. The fountain carvings depect Thetis, the goddess of water and sea, and mother of Achilles. There is a fire feature as well, (Photos coming soon), with carvings of Greek god Hephaestus making Achilles armor.
These two carvings in contrasting Carrara white marble are taken from historical sources of Thetis. As she is always associated with water, one panel has her surrounded by dolphins, and the other panel shows her mounted on a Hippocamp, and bringing the shield that Hephastus has made for Achilles.
