Capitals and pilasters we made for the Hamilton Palace project. These items were missing altogether, so they were recreated from the only photo we had. At first we thought the capitals were just normal corinthian, but after enhancing and enlarging the photo, we could see the eagle details.

Love the warm tones in this bolection fireplace! Sedna granite is not known for it's ease of workability, and took a lot of patience, as it is prone to flaking off in chunks while working. Fabricated here in Texas out of local slab, It's laminated in layers, and each slab layer is sequential from the block. So when the parts are cut out just right, they can be glued together just as they were in the solid block.
I love my vendors overseas, but there's something to be said for being able to pick out your stone at the slab yard, and be working it that afternoon!

These white oak carvings are just completed and ready to apply to the wood paneling at our country house project. When carving applique ornament, we glue the wood to plywood with news print between. After the carving is done, the parts can be peeled off the plywood and the back scraped clean. Super delicate, and not without a few broken leaves where you see the blue tape...otherwise pretty successful!

Here’s some pics of the shields the angels are holding. While the four angels are duplicates of the same design with small variances, the client wanted to have four unique shields. So we applied the ornament after the angels were completed.

Our angels were finally delivered last week to the job site, and are awaiting installation. They will adorn a beautiful hammer beam ceiling, (Second photo shows a test fit from earlier this year.) Can’t wait to see them in place, although it’s sad now that they’re gone! I always enjoy seeing our work in the shop every day, but we’re not nearly finished with this project, so more to follow!

Just left Barcelona. This incredible floating staircase is solid marble steps strung together with post tension cables. Produced and installed by my good buddies at @ancientandmodernus

This is the fire pit feature that sits adjacent to the fountain. The Greek Dorick columns and altar style fire pit go along with the mythological theme of the fountain. On the fountain carvings, we had the goddess Thetis bringing Achilles armor, and here we have the Greek god of blacksmiths, Hephaestus, fashioning the armor.
The marble is Olympian Danby from Vermont. ...and a shout out to my good friend Art Wells, artsculpts for helping me with the clay models while we were overwhelmed with work.
Last pic was actually my first concept sketch that was later revised into the current design.

One more note on the fountain. It’s not by chance that the water flows off each petal in a nice cylindrical column. Multiple mock-ups were tested to get the geometry of the petals just right. The second clip shows how a slight change in the angle of the petal made all the difference. The left side of the example was the final choice.

Well I didn't intend to drag this out over three weeks, but here's another post on the fountain! These two marble medallions were carved in my shop and placed in recess pockets cut in the pink marble.
The theme of this entire patio, (there's always a theme at Old Parkland!), is based on Greek mythology. The fountain carvings depect Thetis, the goddess of water and sea, and mother of Achilles. There is a fire feature as well, (Photos coming soon), with carvings of Greek god Hephaestus making Achilles armor.
These two carvings in contrasting Carrara white marble are taken from historical sources of Thetis. As she is always associated with water, one panel has her surrounded by dolphins, and the other panel shows her mounted on a Hippocamp, and bringing the shield that Hephastus has made for Achilles.

Here's some pics of making the bronze fish spouts for the fountain. We did all the clay modeling and mold making here in my shop, then contracted the bronze castings to my friends across town.

Everyone was running tight on time that year, and there's always a deadline for the grand opening gala. So the fish shown in the first photo are actually a cold cast bronze done with resin and bronze powder. I love how they developed a natural patina over just a few months. Now the real bronze castings look just like this.

Lots going on at Austin Studios this year, but I'm going to take a moment, actually several posts, to look back at one of my favorite projects from the Old Parkland Campus. This is a fountain in the courtyard beyond the clock tower. A very intimate space, and I'm thankful for the opportunity for my contribution.

The fountain is inspired by the architectural carvings of Petra, Jordan, and is carved in Rosa aurora marble from Portugal. (Correct me Al if I'm wrong on the material)
There were many hours of designs before we got to this one, and I always enjoy that process....of exploration. I started with some hand sketches, then 3d modeled the entire fountain, including engineering all the jointing and steel structure within the upper columns and entablature.
I enlisted the help of my long time friends at Ancient and Modern @ancientandmodernus for the production overseas. My shop provided all the models of capitals and keystones, as well as the white marble carvings and the bronze fish spouts.
