3 months agoAgree, however coaches are needed to keep people accountable to actually performing those specific workouts that are an athletes limiter. Almost every athlete tends to not want to do the workouts and training they are worst at. I also think people should see their limiter slightly more than what you’d see in a balanced program.I also consider the ordering to an individualized program. What if in a well rounded program that athletes limiter is the very last piece of the week at the end of the day that week. I would argue they’d see less adaptation from that than if they are doing their weakness fresh.
3 months agoAssuming it is true, we’re probably making a handul of assumptions beyond the ones you reference. Execution of said workouts have to be within the realm intention, the program difficulty needs to line up really well with the athlete, and the room for growth within that cohort needs to be big enough. This is why group programming works well, but also why individual programming works even better. Manipulating the variables within a well rounded program to fine tune frequency, stimulus, and instruction can’t be beat.
3 months agoI say program doesn’t “matter” as much as lot of coaches/atheltes hop it does. Only the stimulus matters. Yet a program can still be shit and lack any stimulating inputs
3 months agoFrequency of exposure to the competitive athlete’s limitation is why individualization matters. 70-80% of the athlete’s training should be focused on developing the qualities they need to become more well rounded (aerobic, strength, speed/power, skill, etc.) to expedite their developmental curve relative to the field. I go back and forth how much individualization the average gym goer needs, but hey, that is why CrossFit works as a methodology. Balanced, regularly varied training works to make people fitter across the 10 general physical skills if they are bringing adequate intensity and effort to the sessions while refining their lifestyle factors to support recovery along the way.
3 months agoKey overlooked aspect: in a WELL rounded program this is probably true. You can check off every box in a well rounded program that should work for almost every athlete you coach, barring they don’t completely suck. That said, most programs aren’t actually well rounded. Go to mayhem they’ll find a make you worse at CrossFit because it’s random, and lacks well rounded touch points. That said, I do think at the highest levels of the sport a specific program can certainly help.
