Are we really turning the residency Match into a public loyalty contest on social media? 👀

Applicants are absolutely allowed to express enthusiasm for a program. But when a residency program collaborates on a post publicly declaring them the applicant’s #1, I think it raises some uncomfortable questions.

ERAS just opened for submissions yesterday. Programs can’t even view applications until September 23.

The Match already has enough gamesmanship. Do we really want to bring it to Instagram too?

Curious what applicants, residents, and PDs think about this one. 👇

I do wonder why the match is the way it is. Why isn’t the residency application process similar to applying to colleges and medical schools?🤔 I get that spots need to be filled but it would be nice for applicants to have choices between acceptances rather than tie their fate to an algorithm

I did it voluntarily. If I violated any rules, let me know.

Please gaming the match is decades old. I was told I was programs number 1 match and guaranteed chief resident spot. Applicants used to do the same thing to programs

I totally understand the concerns. Definitely valid but I don’t think any corroboration or foul play was meant here. I’m not sure exactly but I believe that the IG account that collaborated was moreso student ran. Nonetheless, I get the impression and sentiments from your perspective and others.

I agree with you that it sort of appears distasteful or inappropriate, but I don’t believe it violates NRMP rules. Your concern is that it creates pressure for applicants or programs to reveal intentions prematurely. There’s a difference between, “ I like you”, and “I’ll like you if you promise to like me back.” 😁

I find your distaste interesting. Would you have the same responded if someone posted that their #1 program choice is Neurology at Stanford or is that type of statement more expected and not noteworthy.

Lol can you imagine the embarrassment if that applicant doesn't match there? 😂
