🔹 🛠I’m a DO in an MD dominated specialty. 🙏I have struggled with feelings of inadequacy throughout my training. I even didn’t get into medical school on my first try applying, so I did a post-bacc and reapplied. 📀I first learned about IR during my first year of med school but dismissed it because I didn’t think I had a realistic shot. Then I got all A’s my first block, mostly because I had seen most of the material before, having done the post-bacc. This gave me confidence and propelled me to graduate at the top of my class. 🕹Residency started and the doubt crept up again. Even though I was the first DO that my residency had ever matched, I looked over at my peers and thought that I didn’t measure up. These were guys that graduated from TOP medical schools and sky-high board scores. I felt that I had to prove myself to each attending and on every rotation. Towards the end of residency and throughout fellowship I felt pretty accepted and comfortable. 📸Now I am program director of the IR residency, and guess what? The feelings of inadequacy are creeping in again. I’ll never be that attending that can rattle off the 5 latest clinical trials and the 5 landmark studies on every disease process we treat. I can’t pump out paper after paper like some. I prefer not to lecture at conferences due to an old fear of public speaking. But by going through this journey, I have discovered what my strengths are, and I think that they help me to be a good PD. 🔹
🔹
I am patient
I am approachable
I am optimistic
I am a people person
I am motivated
I am competent
I belong here

💥Tips from a Program Director: Part 7: Tell me about yourself💥⁣
⁣.
.
Edit since I omitted an important slide!
.
DOs:
1️⃣Practice but don’t memorize. It needs to sound authentic or conversational.
2️⃣Stay within 1-2 minutes.
3️⃣Keep it positive and highlight your strengths.
4️⃣Have a formula: ex.:Past, Present, Future.
.
.
Have you gotten this question? Do you love it? Hate it? ⁣
⁣
Either way, you are going to get asked this. Perhaps on zoom interviews more than ever because small talk and ice breakers I feel are a little more forced remotely. ⁣
⁣
These tips should help you nail this and get your interview off to a great start and more importantly, direct the interview in the way you want it to go! ⁣

🏛FIGS on the Hill🏛⁣
⁣
When I left Academic medicine, I felt a palpable loss not being a part of resident education. It was my passion and my platform to advocate for resident rights and resident well-being. Was I being hypocritical by leaving? ⁣
⁣
In steps @wearfigs who gave me this incredible opportunity to speak up for residents on a much LARGER scale than I could have ever dreamed of. I was able to share my stories and perspective on the struggles of today’s residents. Trust me I heard you all loud and clear when I asked for your ideas on how to improve resident well-being. The overwhelming majority of you in some way stated that the two things are needed.⁣
⁣
⏳MORE TIME OFF⁣
💵MORE PAY⁣
⁣
Notice the absence of more wellness modules, more wellness retreats, etc. You don’t need coping mechanisms. You need PROTECTED time off to take care of YOU. Whether that means finally going to the dentist, changing your oil, visiting your family, going to a private retreat away from everything. The inability to do even those little things has a huge negative impact on well-being. Why should a “golden weekend” be such a big deal to residents when the rest of the world just calls it “a weekend”? ⁣
⁣
It’s a monumental task I know, but I’m happy to have started the conversation with policymakers. Our amazing team sat down with Congressional lawmakers to advocate for the proposal of the #AwesomeHumansBill which will be a COMPREHENSIVE bill tackling some of the biggest issues Healthcare Workers of today face: ⁣
⁣
🔹PAY- addressing pay disparities across the country⁣
🔸MENTAL HEALTH - eliminating the punitive nature of actually using mental health resources⁣
🔹WORKPLACE SAFETY - especially as it pertains to safe nurse:patient ratios and resident work hours⁣
🔸TRAINING AND EDUCATION - recruiting, retention, and residency slots⁣
⁣
Thank you to @wearfigs for giving myself and this team the opportunity to have a seat at the table on behalf of all of YOU, AWESOME HUMANS. ⁣

Jalen Hurts reportedly has DVT and bilateral pulmonary emboli and will likely miss the rest of the season.

As an interventional radiologist who treats blood clots, I have some serious questions.

Was a DVT initially missed? Did the superficial clot rapidly progress? Is there an underlying clotting disorder?

And perhaps most bizarrely, why was he reportedly told to stay awake for 36 HOURS to prevent complications, only to be cleared to play an NFL game?

We don’t have the full medical picture, but something about this reported timeline doesn’t add up.

Jalen Hurts has a blood clot in his leg. 🦅 How serious is it, and what could it mean for his season?

As an interventional radiologist who regularly treats blood clots — and a lifelong Eagles fan — I wanted to share my perspective.

The good news? A small, isolated superficial clot caused by trauma can often be managed conservatively. But the size, location, and whether the clot is progressing can make a big difference.

And if anticoagulation is necessary, that could have major implications for his return to the field.

There’s still a lot we don’t know, so any definitive timeline right now is speculation.

Hoping for the best for QB1. Go Birds! 🦅💚

Does your ERAS photo really matter?

My advice: take it seriously, but don’t overthink it. You don’t need an expensive photographer—just aim for a polished, professional photo that represents you well.

Anecdotally, most programs I’ve talked to screen photos during application review—but not all do. Some reviewers may see your photo before deciding whether to interview you.

As someone who reviews residency applications, I don’t think it should influence your chances—but why leave it to chance? 📸

Are we really turning the residency Match into a public loyalty contest on social media? 👀

Applicants are absolutely allowed to express enthusiasm for a program. But when a residency program collaborates on a post publicly declaring them the applicant’s #1, I think it raises some uncomfortable questions.

ERAS just opened for submissions yesterday. Programs can’t even view applications until September 23.

The Match already has enough gamesmanship. Do we really want to bring it to Instagram too?

Curious what applicants, residents, and PDs think about this one. 👇 by @docfuji

PDs are hungry for data! And they are being given less and less quantifiable data points as the years go on. The void absolutely should not be filled with research. I do wholeheartedly believe in holistic review of applications but we need to strike a balance or else sometimes it just seems like guessing.

Curious what you guys think. And send this to a pre-med or med student who might find this series helpful. by @docfuji

@docglauc has created an uproar on the Internet, suggesting that premed and med student research should be banned or even punished by jail time. While there have been many hot takes already provided, I wanted to give some perspective as someone who has been through the process as both an applicant and a residency program director.

Do you think research is too heavily weighted in med achool and residency admissions? Answer the poll below!

If you have any crazy stories to share about how research was perceived during your application cycles, I’d love to hear them! Drop them in the comments! by @docfuji

Finally scrubs that solve the age-old problem, “What do I do with my hands for this picture?”

I’m finding calm within the chaos of juggling several weekly travel baseball practices for my younger 2 kids and still being fresh enough to step into my next shift (with a little extra momentum thanks to @wearfigs ).

I’m seeing just about every social media doctor I know give this same take on the question “Will AI replace physicians?” As someone who utilizes AI in daily practice, I can see the benefits and also the limitations.

Thank you to @creanlutheran.hs @creanlutheran.medicalcohort @tedxcreanlutheranyouth for inviting me to share my thoughts with high school students who will shape the future of AI, medicine, and technology.
