Cassandra (Ruffled) 🎀

Cassandra (Ruffled) is a new take on the mythological character from ancient times, associated with the fall of Troy.
A priestess of Apollo and a seer.
"Ruffled" connects both the decorations on the ceramic sculpture, the sequence of ruffles on the sides, whilst also referring metaphorically to the ruffled and dishevelled state of a person, someone who is in a delirious state, like Cassandra.
Cursed so that no one believed her prophecies, she was branded as delusional and crazy, even when she spoke of the fall of Troy.
She was tragically raped inside her own temple by Ajax and later taken back to Greece as concubine and war trophy of Agamemnon.

Perennial is about more than the work on the walls. It brings together artists from Wirksworth with those working further afield, creating opportunities to meet, exchange ideas and build relationships that continue beyond the exhibition. By connecting artists, audiences and the gallery, it helps create the conditions for future collaborations and new opportunities to emerge.
The Opening Party on Friday 28 August (and the Wrap Party & Perennial Awards on Sunday 20 September) are instrumental to that ambition. They're not simply celebrations of the exhibition, but opportunities for artists, visitors and supporters to spend time together, start conversations and get to know one another. With this in mind we are fortunate that Haarlem Artspace Gallery is located above The Feather Star Ale House—literally the world's greatest pub.
We look forward to welcoming you to this year's Perennial exhibition and celebrating the artists at the heart of Haarlem Artspace.
