ANNOUNCING SOPHIE GOODCHILD: NIGHT FEED

Nottingham based artist Sophie Goodchild’s new exhibition Night Feed brings together a new body of felted works developed during her residency at Porthmeor Studios @porthmeorstudios in St Ives, Cornwall.

Working from Studio 5 with the Atlantic directly behind her, Goodchild developed the works through sustained encounters with the coastline — walking, swimming and observing the changing landscape. The experience of pregnancy and the physical transformation of her body became closely intertwined with the environment around her.

Using wool, water, soap, pressure and repetition, Goodchild transforms loose fibres into dense, layered surfaces. The geology of West Penwith — granite fissures, strata, folds and fractures — became part of the visual language of the work, alongside recurring forms of eggs, vessels, shells, caverns and openings.

The works move between containment and confinement, body and landscape, image and object. They are not representations of either, but emerge through a process in which the two continually overlap.

The title Night Feed evokes an intimate act of care, but also the repetitive rhythms of the body: tide, pregnancy, labour, feeding and making.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE AN EXHIBITION!

This autumn, SEEDLINGS is becoming an exhibition project!

From September to November, our young artists aged 4–11 will take part in three special SEEDLINGS workshops, creating work that will come together in a group exhibition at Haarlem Artspace Gallery.

Each workshop will explore a different idea and way of making — from birds and giant plants to shapes, patterns and printing. Children will have the freedom to experiment, make their own choices and develop their ideas, with gentle support and starting points for younger artists.

We want to see what happens when lots of different young imaginations come together.

THE WORKSHOPS

26 SEPTEMBER — BIRDS
Draw, design and imagine your own extraordinary birds.

24 OCTOBER — GIANT TREES & FLOWERS
Think big and paint boldly as we create enormous plants from cardboard.

14 NOVEMBER — STAMPING
Experiment with shapes, colour, repetition and pattern to create printed pictures.

Everything made across the three sessions will become part of the SEEDLINGS exhibition, on display at Haarlem Artspace Gallery from 27 NOVEMBER–6 DECEMBER.

And then, on 7 DECEMBER, we’ll celebrate with a special SEEDLINGS Christmas Party at the gallery — our young artists’ very own private view. A chance for the children and their families to see the exhibition together, celebrate their work and mark the end of our autumn project.

Thank you to everyone who has visited, supported, shared, talked about and taken part in the exhibition over the past few weeks. It’s been brilliant to see so many artists and visitors through the gallery.

We’re open 12–7pm today, and we’d love to see you one last time.

Join us for the Perennial wrap party from 4–7pm at Haarlem Artspace. Come and have a drink, celebrate the exhibition and help us bring it to a close.
And afterwards, head downstairs to the Featherstar for a drink and keep the evening going.

We hope to see you all tonight.

A different view of Haarlem Artspace.

As we celebrate 10 years of Haarlem Artspace, we’ve been thinking about what the Studios mean — not just as physical spaces for artists to work, but as part of a much wider creative ecosystem.

Haarlem Artspace exists to support artists at different stages of their practice, creating space for people to make, develop, connect and find new opportunities.

That happens through the Studios, but also through the wider programme: PERENNIAL, our annual exhibition bringing together artists connected to Wirksworth and the wider region; GERMINATOR, supporting artists as they develop their practice; and CULTIVATOR, our ongoing programme of artist development, conversation and exchange.

Alongside exhibitions, residencies, workshops, crits and events, these programmes are part of our attempt to build something that lasts — a connected creative community where artists can develop their work and find ways to support one another.

Thank you to Mathias Graf for this amazing drone footage gives a brilliant glimpse of the place where so much of that activity happens and to our good friend Matt Ashton, as always, for blooping the good bleep.

Here’s to the next ten years.

OPEN STUDIOS — TODAY

Come and visit Haarlem Artspace Studios today as part of the Wirksworth Festival Arts Trail.

Set within the beautiful Haarlem Mill, our studios occupy a former industrial building on the edge of Wirksworth — a working environment with its own history, character and connection to the town’s long tradition of making. Today, the doors are open and you can step inside the studios to meet the artists, see where their work is made and discover what’s happening behind the finished work.
This year’s Open Studios features:

Sophie Cartmell, Amanda Graham, Amanda Nichol, Diana Green, Fiona Allen, Gunther Walker, Kasra Jalilapour, Martin Lowe, Pat McCabe, Peter Knight, Rebecca Gallagher, Rose Kindred-Boothby, Ruth Cox, Tricia Rice and Gavin Muschamp.

Working across painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, jewellery, assemblage, sound and more, the studios offer a chance to encounter a wide range of creative practices in the places where they actually happen.

If you’re exploring the Arts Trail today, make time to visit Haarlem Mill. Alongside Perennial at Haarlem Artspace Gallery, it’s a chance to see a huge amount of art across the town — and to experience two different sides of what Haarlem Artspace is about.

Interested in joining our community?
We also have studio spaces becoming available. Come and talk to us today about what it means to be part of Haarlem Artspace Studios.

Wirksworth Festival Arts & Architecture Weekend is almost here!

This Saturday 12 & Sunday 13 September, the town opens up for one of the most extraordinary weekends in the regional arts calendar: hundreds of artists across 70 venues, with homes, gardens, public spaces and unexpected corners of Wirksworth transformed into spaces for contemporary art and making.

At Haarlem Artspace Gallery PERENNIAL continues — our annual exhibition bringing together more than 100 artists connected to Haarlem, Wirksworth and the wider creative community. Across the weekend, it sits within a much larger conversation happening throughout the town: a rare opportunity to encounter an enormous range of work in galleries, studios, houses and spaces that are usually closed to the public.

Meanwhile, Haarlem Artspace Studios will be opening their doors for the weekend. Come and meet the artists, see where the work happens and step inside one of Wirksworth’s important creative communities.

There’ll also be live music and performance throughout the town, theatre and family events, concerts in St Mary’s Church, Gig on the Roof, and plenty of places to stop, eat and drink between venues. On Saturday evening, Stardisco returns to the Millennium Woodland with bands, DJs, food, cocktails and a bar — taking the Festival well into the night.

Come make a day of it. Or a weekend. Pick up a Trail Guide. Wander. Get lost occasionally. See something you weren’t expecting.

Head to wirksworthfestival.co.uk for more details.

PERENNIAL CONTINUES THIS WEEKEND

Perennial, Haarlem Artspace’s annual exhibition celebrating the artists who make up our growing creative community, continues this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Bringing together over 100 artists working across a huge range of disciplines, backgrounds and approaches, Perennial is about more than the work on the walls. It’s about conversations, connections and the relationships that grow when artists and audiences come together.

And this weekend, there’s even more reason to visit.

Perennial is part of the Wirksworth Festival Arts Trail, as the town transforms for one of the biggest weekends in the Wirksworth creative calendar. @wirksworthfestival

And a reminder that it’s also Haarlem Artspace Studios annual Open Studios — a chance to step inside the spaces where work is being made, meet the artists and creative practitioners who make up the Haarlem community, and discover more of what’s happening across our growing creative ecosystem. @haarlemartspacestudios

Make a weekend of it: explore the Arts Trail, visit the studios, meet the makers — and come and see Perennial.

What a night. ❤️

A huge thank you to the hundreds of people who joined us for the opening of Perennial on Friday.

Perennial is about bringing people together — artists, audiences, friends, neighbours and supporters — and the opening party was a brilliant reminder of what a creative community can feel like when everyone comes together in one place.

With 100+ artists from Wirksworth and much further afield, there was so much to see, discover and talk about. More importantly, there were new conversations being started, old connections renewed, and plenty of ideas (and drinks!) being shared.

Thank you to every artist who is part of Perennial, everyone who came along to celebrate with us, and to our wonderful friends at The Feather Star Ale House — the world’s greatest pub. 🍻

We’re so grateful for the energy, generosity and enthusiasm you brought to the evening.

Perennial is now open — come and spend some time with the artists and the work at the heart of Haarlem Artspace.

And we’ll see you again for the Wrap Party & Perennial Awards on Sunday 20 September. ✨

Register now for a place on Cultivator, a new artist development programme at Haarlem Artspace.

Cultivator brings artists together for group critiques, conversations, guest speakers and professional development, creating a space to share work, test ideas, exchange knowledge and build peer connections.

The first session will be a group critique, offering two artists the opportunity to bring new work, works in progress, emerging ideas or questions about their practice and receive thoughtful, constructive feedback from a group of peers. You don’t need to bring finished work — Cultivator is a space to explore ideas and develop your practice through conversation and critical exchange.

The programme will be led by Abbie Canning with support from Kasra Jalilipour, bringing experience across artistic practice, education, curation, production and critical enquiry.

Wednesday 16 September
7–9pm
Haarlem Artspace Gallery
Red Lion, Market Place, Wirksworth DE4 4ET

Whether you’re looking for feedback on your work, want to explore a new direction, or simply want to connect with other artists, Cultivator is a space to share, discuss, learn and develop.

Places are limited. Register now via the link in our bio to join the first session.
