The Kneelers
Wool, 190 × 350 cm

Part of the exhibition Night Feed at Haarlem Artspace, a new body of felted works developed during Sophie Goodchild’s residency at Porthmeor Studios, St Ives, Cornwall.

The Keelers took its starting point from Goodchild’s early morning walks along the coastal path from St Ives to Zennor, a repeated pilgrimage through the ancient landscape of West Penwith to visit the medieval church and its celebrated carving of a mermaid. Inside the church, embroidered kneelers bring together devotional imagery, Cornish flora and fauna, and traditions of textile-making. These cushions inspired the work’s enlarged, divided format.

The split-screen composition allows multiple images and experiences to coexist across a panoramic surface, reflecting the expansive landscape through which Goodchild walked. The mermaid legend and traditions of local craft intersect with her exploration of pregnancy, as bodily cycles echo the shifting weather, tides and seasons of the Atlantic coast.

In contrast to the speed of contemporary image-making, The Kneelers develops through the slow, tactile process of layering and positioning wool before fusing the fibres through friction and water. As the material contracts and shifts, the intended arrangement is subtly warped, introducing an element of unpredictability into the composition. The resulting interplay of colour, texture and imagery creates a sense of visual disorientation, echoing the experience of navigating a vast, changing landscape. Just as tides continually reshape the coastline, the process of making transforms the image itself.

OPENING TONIGHT | SOPHIE GOODCHILD: NIGHT FEED

Tonight we open Night Feed, a new body of felted works by Nottingham based artist Sophie Goodchild, developed during her residency at Porthmeor Studios in St Ives, Cornwall.

Shaped by the Atlantic, the geology of the coastline of West Penwith and the experience of pregnancy, the works explore the relationship between body and landscape, containment and expansion, and the cycles of care and transformation.

Working with wool, water, pressure and repetition, Goodchild creates richly layered surfaces that sit somewhere between painting and textile, image and object. The works bring together the expansive and the intimate, holding traces of the landscape and the physical experience of making.

The exhibition also marks a particularly special moment for Sophie, whose daughter has since arrived. Huge congratulations to Sophie and her family.

Join us tonight from 6pm at Haarlem Artspace to celebrate the opening of Night Feed.

We look forward to seeing you there.

ANNOUNCING SOPHIE GOODCHILD: NIGHT FEED

Nottingham based artist Sophie Goodchild’s new exhibition Night Feed brings together a new body of felted works developed during her residency at Porthmeor Studios @porthmeorstudios in St Ives, Cornwall.

Working from Studio 5 with the Atlantic directly behind her, Goodchild developed the works through sustained encounters with the coastline — walking, swimming and observing the changing landscape. The experience of pregnancy and the physical transformation of her body became closely intertwined with the environment around her.

Using wool, water, soap, pressure and repetition, Goodchild transforms loose fibres into dense, layered surfaces. The geology of West Penwith — granite fissures, strata, folds and fractures — became part of the visual language of the work, alongside recurring forms of eggs, vessels, shells, caverns and openings.

The works move between containment and confinement, body and landscape, image and object. They are not representations of either, but emerge through a process in which the two continually overlap.

The title Night Feed evokes an intimate act of care, but also the repetitive rhythms of the body: tide, pregnancy, labour, feeding and making.
